A 30-Second MLM "Guru" Experiment

Do this experiment. It will take you less than 30 seconds to do so. Go to Google and type the words 'MLM training'. As soon as you do that, you will see bazillions of websites listed, owned by some MLM guru or networking expert. Now let me ask you a question, if the failure rate in our industry is 95%, how come almost everybody is claiming to be a guru?

Could it be that a lot of folks are trying to be someone else they are truly not? (I mean, if you're reading this and you are a true expert, then there's no problem with that, I take my hats off to you).

However, the secret to becoming a successful MLM entrepreneur is not to be a guru, but to be a true leader. There's a big difference between the two. I think when you're a guru, it implies that you're sharing a vertical relationship with your people. You are sending a message that "I am up here and you are all down there". You may get some sales, sign ups, and loyal fans that way, but there will be less genuine leverage because those "followers" rely heavily on you -- doing less work by themselves. People are lazy and they would rather have some gifted person do all the hard stuff for them, while they wait for the cash to flow in.

A leader, meanwhile, motivates people to action but knows how to delegate power and responsibility. In fact, the best leaders I know have very limited technical skills. True leaders have a higher emotional quotient than intelligence quotient. They know that the secret to making more sales and getting more sign-ups is not to constantly flood their prospects with information all the time. It is much more important to uncover prospect's needs by ASKING QUESTIONS and listening intently. In short, leaders don't have a high-handed approach to the business.

Gurus need to flaunt their income checks and proof of income before people can believe them.

Leaders can influence people even if their present income is ZERO. Their goal is to sincerely help others, and NOT to "trap" people to some marketing baits.

So which would you rather be?

Thanks, Michael....

A true leader has your best interest at heart!

You helped me picture it so clearly.
Difference between a ''guru'' and a true leader:
True leaders give you their phone number and say ''Call Anytime!''
True leaders also develop leaders that do the same for others...
Ongoing leadership development is what we need more of,
and that is what people are truly looking for.

I appreciate you,

Bazillions = 980,000

Your right there are a lot of them 980,000 today

I took time to watch one video on page two of google. It was a seven and one half minute presentation. The first two and one half minutes he almost had me convinced to join him. But I think the real leadership is right here at Better Networker. I am trying to get up enough courage to write about a controversial subject and see what my peers have to say.

I agree with you careing means sharing and I try to share what what little I know every time I write,

Thanks Dianne

Re: A 30-Second MLM "Guru" Experiment

Hi Dianne,

You wrote a very good and entertaining article.  You are exactly right.  If there are actually a bazillion (that's a big number) MLM gurus out there, then the 95% failure rate must be wrong.  But I don't think it is.

I agree.  A major key to success in this industry is to find a true leader to follow.  As you say, a true leader is one who exhibits a genuine interest in the prospect and their team members.

One must be a "servant' leader.  The only way to truly be a leader is to find out the needs of your prospects and team members and then to address those specific needs.

Great job, Dianne.  I wish you the very best!

Appreciate the article Dianne!

The word Guru invokes images of some Swami sitting in a field surrounded by thousands performing miracles. It doesn't really fit with Network Marketing, and the leadership principles.  I think the term will go away soon enough, as more people are educated to become leaders and not followers.

Thank you Dianne

I think there will always be people claiming to be "Gurus" since there will always be people looking to exploit an angle. However, that really doesn't matter because a true Leader will attract people to himself and achieve success no matter what other people do. Remember folks, a true Leader determines and makes his own reality, he doesn't rely on others to make it for him.

Make every day better,
