Are You Carrying Buckets?

Read More: Personal Development

I let my personal trainer, Jeff, borrow a copy of "Rich

Dad Poor Dad" by Robert Kiyosaki. A few weeks later during

our workout session he blurts out, "You know what -- I'm

carrying buckets!"

"Huh?" I replied.

Jeff reminded me in the "Rich Dad" book Kiyosaki gives the

example of someone carrying buckets to supply a town with

a water and another person building a water pipe line to

carry the water. It took longer for the pipeline to be

built but once it was done - the money would continue to

come in with or without him.

What are you doing?

Sadly most people are carrying buckets. They are getting

paid based on the hours they work. Even if you are a

highly paid surgeon or attorney your income is still

limited by the hours you can work. Everybody has been

taught to think the harder you work the more money you

make. What if that's completely wrong? What if it's the

smarter the work, the more money you make?

Personally, I prefer to work once and get paid over and

over and over again. And there are lots of ways you can

create recurring revenue for yourself. It could be via

royalties from an invention, a song, or a book. It could

be from network marketing. It could be from real estate.

It could be dividends from investments. Or it could be

from a multitude of other ways aside from the typical

9-to-5 grind.

The majority of my income day-in and day-out is a direct

result of work I did 1, 2, 3...even 6+ years ago or more. For

instance, if you create an information product to sell

(like a report, ebook, software, video, etc) you only have

to do the work once of creating it and once to write the

sales letter.

Then if you set up some automatic promotion avenues like

an affiliate program or autoresponder messages - you can

continue to get paid for that product indefinitely. One of

biggest income streams is a product I created 5 years ago

and still makes me a nice six-figure income each year.

Frankly, I couldn't turn off my recurring revenue streams

right now if I tried. That's because much of what I've

created has fed on itself. One product refers people to

another. Our affiliate network (over 35,000) refer people

to our sites. Some of our sites cross-promote our other

sites, etc. etc.

When you keep working on activities that have recurring

value you'll create a momentum that's tough to stop. But

the truth is -- it IS hard work in the beginning. It's

like a rocket taking off in which it burns most of its

fuel on lift off.

You need to put in the hours and effort upfront and then

you can ease off the throttle. But if you don't put in the

extra effort upfront you'll never achieve lift off and get

that momentum you need.

The more you think about doing the work once and being

paid multiple times the more creative your mind will

become. Ask yourself the right questions and you'll get

the right answers.

In fact, even this article, if I'm lucky, will become a

recurring income producing activity. I wrote this material

once and the publicity from it will hopefully get a few

people to my websites and into my marketing funnel.

Now of course, I'm not saying that every activity I do

each day is highly leveraged because I still do some "dumb

stuff" like checking email or filling out tax forms. But

I'm working on outsourcing as much as I can and focusing

just on income producing activities (just like you

should).

Carrying Buckets

What a Great way to introduce Network marketing to someone with out being a salesman. The Best Salesmen do not sell at all. 90 percent of the population do not like to be sold to. It is better to supply them with something they are looking for already. I give away a free ebook and Networking and making friends has never been so easy. Juanita Waterman

I prefer building the pipeline!

Excellent article Yanik...totally agree with it!!!

btw, do you mind if I use this article as part of my value content in the near future? ;D

If only....

I agree 100%

If only we learned this kind of philosophy in highschool instead of trigonometry

There's Nothing Better Than...

Getting checks while you sleep. I like getting paid 24/7. There should definitely be more emphasis on entrepreneurialism in school;teach kids to be leaders and create their own work, rather than rely on some entity to do it for them.

We Are All Building A Pipieline

Yanik, Great article. The funny thing is we are all building pipelines of cashflow but some of us are building our own, not someone elses.

I like to think that buiding a business is like digging a well for water. Everyone is thirsty but not everyone wants to dig the well. Those who do the work get the water and the rest of us pay them for the convienience of drinking from the well.

For those of you who think you don't need to build a business just remember that life changes and somewhere down the line you may wish you had started a business after all.

It's always a good idea to dig your well before you need the water.

Some Think They Have A Pipeline But Sadly...

The biggest attraction the network marketing industry has is the promise of residual income - doing something once an getting paid on it over and over again.

Sadly for most networkers it is only after years of effort that most discover the company they have given their heart and soul to can not deliver on that promise!

There are many people on the net saying that the reason most fail to meet their goals in MLM is because of poor marketing tactics. I have to disagree.

If your network marketing company's business model is not based on sound principles the chance of long term residual income is less than 3% even if you have the marketing down.

I know I may strike a few nerves here but I have learned the truth at the school of hard knocks. So before you start to build a pipeline make sure you really understand your company's business model other wise you will discover the water simply stops flowing.

Paul's comment is great.  I

Paul's comment is great.  I was actually introduced to network marketing in my senior year of high school.  I hated calculus and I was more focused on handing out cd's about my home business.  Well it failed in my cold market, but everything is going a lot better now.  No more cold markets, I am building that pipeline that will continuously funnel prospects into my businesses.

Rich Dad Poor Dad

Thanks for reminding us about a book that everyone should read and recommend. Another one of  Robert Kiosaki's classics is "The Cash Flow Quadrant", which should also be on everyone's reading list.

My father-in-law is a classic example of the "Poor Dad" mentality, and he taught his children well. Even though my husband understands the concept of building the pipeline, his actions show that he still embraces his poor Dad's teachings (work hard, get lots of education, and if that's not working, get more education!).

It's hard for many of us to unlearn what our society and school systems tend to teach us; that if you study hard and get a secure job, all will be well.

And moving from the "left side" to the "right side" (from bucket carrier to ongoing income earner) can be a struggle.

But I love the analogy of the rocket launch. I know the hard work that I put in now will pay dividends for the rest of my life!

No more buckets

Great article! I was introduced to concepts of Kiyosaki and others in the recent months and have read sometimes overwhelming amount of books and information lately. I am excited and learning soo much. I am ready to start building pipelines. No more buckets!

Pretty sure he won't mind....

I'm pretty sure that not only would Yanik not mind (as long as you're giving him credit for the article), but he's counting on people using it ;-)

Great explanation of residual income

I've read a few explanations of residual income and this was a good one.  I liked the emphasis on "hard work at the beginning."  I fear that too many people think that a network marketing business [as example] is a "get rich quickly" program...it definitely is not.  That's not to say that some people haven't risen to high incomes quickly, because some have, but they are not the average.  However, the potential is there.  It's like the Law of Averages...out of 100 queries, you get 90 no's and 10 yes's.  Some people give up after 40 no's...not realizing that they just might have to do all 90 no's before hitting their 10...but then, they are off and running!  Hard work, yes, but if people really knew what residual income is and what it can do for them, they would put in the hard work and stop "carrying buckets."

Sharing Content

Great article Yanik!  I love to share the book Rich Dad Poor Dad with anyone that has interest in Network Marketing!  I think it is a great example of true life.  Sadly some people just miss the whole picture.

Great Reminder

I love Robert Kiyosaki.  He is the number one reason WHY I decided to look at network marketing again.  I created and owned a highly successful party and event business for 8 years: I worked all the time, all weekends, most holidays, etc.  It was Robert Kiyosaki that helped me realize that what I once thought was the "American Dream" was simply ME...OWNING MY JOB.

 Thanks for the reminder!

Best!

Great Word Pictures

Wonderful article. I spent the last 30 years trading time for money. I invested my time and talent in  two other companies and was told be be grateful I had a job. I was, now I am unemployed.

Today, I am building my network marketing business big and building it once with a five, no six pillars company that is solid. Robert Kiyosaki is a wonderful author. I enjoyed his book and learned from it. But he has never built a downline in a network marketing company. I'll take the guy with 30+ years in the real world of MLM and has the battle scars to prove it.

To your Success.

The source of "Carrying Buckets" is a short book by Burke Hedges

To give credit where credit is due, the story did not originate with Robert Kiyosaki.  It originated with a book by Burke Hedges that came out, I believe, in the early part of this decade.

It's called The Parable of the Pipeline

I read it back in 2002 and thought that just the first chapter, the chapter that actually contains the story, was a brilliant way to help people to understand the power and brilliance of the MLM compensation model and business.

So, with some creative people, we put together an animated presentation of the parable that anyone can use.  If you have not seen it before, I invite you to watch it (free) here:

My Dad still hasn't learned!

Rich Dad is an awesome book, very eye opening for those of us that had the "poor dad" mentalities in our family household.  I wished I would have read this book earlier in life, so I could have taught my kids the right way.  I am giving them both this book for a gift on their "birthday" this year and hopefully they will take the time to read it.  Especially, since I gave it to them and they didn't have spend money buying it.

Thanks for the great post.  I will be attending one of Robert's investment seminars this year sometime.  He has lots of knowledge to share.

Can't wait to be one of those" rich".
