Are You Reading Your Policies And Procedures Before You Check That Box?

Read More: Discipline  |  Personal Development

Whenever you signed up for your company, did you check that little box and didn't read your policies and procedures?

I'm going to leave the names of the companies out, but I want to share with you some clauses from some VERY popular company PnPs.

1) Distributors must have ongoing contact with their organization, including the accompaniment of downline distributors to Company meetings, training sessions, and other functions."

Wow... okay, so I'll have to fly all over the world so I can accompany my downline people to meetings?

2) You must adhere to, and enforce the compliance of all members of their Personal Groups with the COmpany policies as outlined in this P&R, the Member Application, the Distributor Application for Corporations, Partnerships, and Limited Liability Companies, Company publications, and administrative letters to the Field, including any amendments to any of these documents that may be adopted from time to time."

How do I enforce anything?  I can't even get my downline to return my calls!

3) The distributor agrees to participate in up to twenty Company meetings and events annually, at the direction of the Company.

Didn't I want to go into network marketing so I could FIRE my boss?  Why do I all of a sudden have a new one telling me what to do?

4) Distrubitors must monitor the Distributors in their Downline Organizations to ensure that downline Distributors do not make improper product or business claims, or engage in any illegal or inappropriate conduct.

How do I keep tabs on someone who's seventeen levels down from me?

5) [The Company] may elect to not renew any distributorship for any reason it deems to be in the best interest of the Company, its customers and other distributors.  These reasons may include, but are not limited to the following: Failure to use best efforts to promote [The Company's] products and services, and actions that bring dishonor to or impute the reputation of [The Company].

Who decides if you're using your "best efforts"?  Who defines "dishonor"?  Does "in the best interest of the company" include their needing to steal your check because they are in the hole and the shareholders are complaining?

Guys, these aren't even the WORST of the PnP clauses.  They get so much WORSE!

I hope you guys understand why it's so important to read your Policies and Procedures...

Sometimes MLM looks more like a J.O.B.

Great points, Shane...
The longer the policies and procedures the worst it is for the distributor.
Here we are thinking that we'll be able to retire in 5 years.
And then...here comes that terrible word ''termination'' that can take it all away.
May I add that most of the times, everything is being taken away
at the companies ''sole discretion''...
Imagine that!...

Thanks Shane!

I don't remember if I read them or not, it was a petty annoyance that wasn't important to me, being a blue type personality!  Now I actually enjoy going through them, to see whats behind the smoke and mirrors!

Thanks again for sharing!

Great satire

Shane I found your article tongue in cheek funny. It made me laugh. I can just see the imaginary individuals you describe, saying to themselves"How do I do That"?  You make a super point.

you need to thoroughly understand all of the things that can effect you ability to succeed.  There are 5 conditions that must be met in order for the average person to be successful. policies and procedures are on top of the list.

people probably know more about their auto loans than they do about the employment contracts they have signed off on and they are the documents governing your business relationship. Why would sane people invest their time and money when they really don't know how they get paid.

I am coming to the conclusion that most people do not see MLM as a real business,

great finds

I've seen some pretty crazy things in terms and conditions before - but these ones just about take the cake.  I also love the ones that require the upline to buy any excess inventory the downline has if the downline decides to leave....

Very Informative!

Hello Shane. This is some great advice being offered. Reading company policies and procedures are very important and vital to any network marketers' success. It could mean the difference between remaining with the company or being removed, dropped, discontinued...you get the point. As crucial as it is, it is often overlooked. I know because I've done it many times. So thank you for reminding everyone to stay focused and know what we're getting ourselves into before we make a commitment. Keep up the good work! Have a nice day...
