Can You Handle the Truth?
I love the movie "A Few Good Men" (where are they btw?) when Jack Nicholson delivers that classic line "You can't handle the truth." and in many ways he is right.
When asking for someone's opinion on what we're doing, can we really handle the 'truth' of what that person says? Where is the truth in what they're saying?
Truth is subjective. My truth over your truth of what the world is, how it works, the truth about people, my experience versus your own experience. So when we ask for an honest opinion are we really getting it?
An honest opinion is still only an opinion. Granted it may be an opinion offered with what someone really thinks and not glossed over, but don't take it all as THE TRUTH.
It is THEIR TRUTH.
For example let's look at Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki for a moment. Both men are rich and well accomplished. Yet their 'truths' about what works are entirely different. Trump is primarily in real estate and construction while Kiyosaki is in marketing and business (albeit he did branch into real estate investing later). Yet both men speak a TRUTH when they want you to get rich.
Neither way is completely right or completely wrong. So the truth may not necessarily be completely right.
If you ask someone for the truth or an honest opinion, you need to be a totally confident individual and able to, as we aussies say 'cop it on the chin mate'. Don't let it hurt you. Take it for what it is. And, take it or leave it. Don't get drawn into believing what someone says just because it's their truthful answer. It still doesn't necessarily mean it's right.
My girlfriends give me the truth about my hair all the time. They want me to cut it. They tell me with 'love' that it'll make me look more corporate blah blah blah. I'm never cutting my hair short. It's part of who I am and what I like.
So by all means listen to someone's truthful opinion, but don't necessarily believe it.
