Create Your Own Definition of Success - The Missing Link

Read More: Mindset  |  Personal Development

I just returned from a phenomenal workshop that someone who is at the top of my company put on. This was not a typical workshop.  In fact, it was extraordinary.  The speaker was a young woman who rose to a top position of an established network marketing company in a record breaking 3 years at the age of 27..

Unlike most workshops, where you get "How To" information, she talked  about what goes on inside of our heads and what keeps us from becoming successful.  We have all been to seminars or workshops and gone home on a high, only to be further confused and paralyzed.  Most of us do not need another "How To" class.  We need our heads screwed on instead.  Success is possible for anyone.  It is a choice we all can make.

We often find ourselves seeking someone else’s definition of success and that is what gets us stuck.  You are told to rise up to a certain position, earn a big prize, drive a particular type of car.  The problem is, if our goals are not in synergy with our personal view of success, we sabotage ourselves.

"Character development must proceed results."  Think about that.  We focus immediately on the results and do not work to build our character or leadership traits.  Your title is not as important as what is going on inside.  I personally know people who have reached top positions who are a mess.  Because of this, they are just as frustrated and mediocre as anyone else.

Rate yourself as a leader from 1-10.  If you see yourself as a 4,  you are never going to attract an 8. If you  consider yourself to be a 4,  work on leading 1s, 2s and 3s.  As you develop as a leader, and say, move up to a 6, you will have attained the ability to mentor 4s and 5s. And so on . . .

John Maxwell said that "Leadership is influence."  It doesn’t necessarily mean on stage. You can be influential in many ways. As you grow as a person, your circle of influence rises.

Where do you see yourself on the leader scale?  What can you do to improve your character and leadership traits?

  • Study — Listen to those above you, but also learn from others in different fields who are successful.  This could be an athlete, a world leader, or anyone else who has achieved greatness.
  • Practice — Put what you learn into action. Take ownership and gain experience through repetition.

Character development is the missing link in our industry.

We know what we need to do to be successful.  We just aren’t doing it.

Having potential means nothing.  You must take action on your ability.  "Don’t go down in a pile of potential."

Surprisingly, this woman did not do anything particularly record breaking before she reached the top.  She never had high sales, and did not sponsor tons of personal down line.   What she did was be consistent with a laser focus. She didn’t allow distractions.  As she said, "You don’t have to do anything great to be great in this business."

She had a strategy and it worked.

"You will never perform beyond your own belief level."

She studied people who are champions.  The one thing that she was told by each and every one of them was: "Just do it."

Champions do not wait for things to calm down.

They do not wait for the kids to get just a little older.

For their families to be supportive,

For all their finances to be in place or any multitude of excuses.

They chose to rise above the drama of their life and be the person they were called to be despite the chaos.

They were the driver of the car and didn’t sit in the passenger seat.  When you are the driver you know who your passengers are, what route you are taking, how fast you want to go.  You have control over your situation and where you are going.

Create YOUR personal definition of Success.  This must be your own and not someone else’s perception of what success is.  It is hard to hit a moving target, but it is impossible to hit a non existent target.

Here are the elements of Life’s Superhighway.

  1. Spiritual
  2. Family
  3. Professional
  4. Personal Development — not necessarily what you learn in school or what diploma you have, but what you learn from people along your journey of life.
  5. Physical Health
  6. Financial Health
  7. Social Life
  8. Community

Define a BULLSEYE for each one of the 8 lanes of your life and write a description of what would make you pleased, proud and satisfied if you accomplish it.

The sum total is your definition of success.
