Dave Is Upset Because He Says He Got Scammed Big Time!
It all started when my friend says, “I can’t believe this! I've been had! Biggest Scam ever!"
Dave thought that when he got his £23,000 job, he can relax. Yes, he can enjoy the years of labor from kindergarten, school, college and university. He had images of sunset, beaches, lots of holidays and time with family, friends.
Maybe even guitar lessons and going to the gym. Oh yeah! Guess again.
Watch Those Numbers Dave
I remember years ago, when I came to England. I could travel on a bus and go all over the city, for 2 pence. I could get bread for 20 pence. Petrol was quiet cheap in those days too. Then I saw the bus fares as a kid rise to 5 pence, and then it went up to 50p. Then in no time, it went up to £1.00. When that happened, something clicked.
I had this facination to watch the prices on everything. For example, fish and chips was 30p and now, it's gone up to £1.50. In some places where the fish and chips are great, it costs £3.00
If the value of money keeps going down but the prices going up then wouldn’t that affect my wages? I was only 16 years old when this question hit me. So I said to my friends:
“Hey, sorry guys but I’m not going to the university.”
Now, don’t get me wrong here. I am not against education. I am full on for education but for me, personally, I needed a different kind of education too. The one that I don't have to work all my life and end up with a pension. The other reasons are:
Bread went up to £1.00. A full pint of milk is now £1.20 and a larger one is 1.40p. The bus fare went up to 1.50 one way and if you want a full day ticket, it is £3.50p. And the talk of the day for most people was, “which petrol (gas) station is cheaper.” A conversation I got sick of and don't bother with.
£10,000 was a lot years ago. Now, earning 23,000 seems like 10,000 a year or even less. You have to work harder for this money. You may even do long hours and be part of some political bigoted game in the office. If you don't join then your "not a team player."
Funny thing though. The last company I worked for, shared big talk on team work, integrity, tranparency, while they planned behind doors to sell their company. We found out by letter and no one was around to talk to. Many lost their jobs. It was chaos for a while.
Dave Figured it out!
Here’s what Dave found out. He gets paid £23,000 a year. He does 37 and half hours a week. This is for an I.T programmer whiz guy and trust me, he is a wizard on computer. He knows different computer languages and now PHP. But not so smart in realizing that before he gets the money, someone, somewhere sneaks in and snatches a few hundred pounds.
So £23,000 a year is £1,916.67 a month. In a week, that’s £442.31
Don’t get too excited because like guy who said to me, "I make this much money in my traditional business and I don't have a website!"
I replied: “Tell me your NET PROFIT not your Gross!”
Yes, he spent a lot of money on advertising, on so many things like staff, distribution, expenses for the building and his own home, shop and more staff. The Net Profit didn’t come to much after all that has been paid. I know, I sat down to calculate everything and that’s when his jaw dropped.
So good old Dave gets £23,000.00 a year, £1,916.67 a month and in a week, he gets £442.31 Gross. Remember, Gross not Net.
After 15% tax being paid, Dave gets £17,677.60 a year (Net)
£1,473.13 a month and again Net, which he keeps.
And weekly, it is £339.95
Tax man takes £3,393.00 a year, £282.75 a month and £65.25 a week.
Don't Forget The NI
It gets better. There is the National insurance we have to also consider. Deduction for Dave is 8%.
He has to pay £1,929.40 a year. £160.78 a month and £37.10 a week.
That’s why the total is £1,473.13 a month.
Are you with me so far. Pay attention. This is the part many ignore.
Now, I don't mind when someone is proud of his job. Actually, be positive is a great thing to me but let's not play around here.
Here's the reality, and a reality that goes for forty years of ones life in a job. Or shall I say, jobs with a capital "S."
Yes, I had 10 different jobs because each company went down due to some change in technology or the directors didn't see what was coming at them.
One of them was the Internet!
Dave Adds The Numbers
I will be very generous. I am a nice guy :) Not going to go too high so we can't argue on this but dig deep to the message I am sharing here with good old Dave:
Monthly Outgoing
£350.00 Rent or Mortgage
£30.00 Gas
£30.00 Electric
£30.00 water rates
£40.00 Phone with TV, Satellite and internet
£30.00 Mobile Phone
£60.00 Petrol
£15 Car Tax
£70 Car Insurance
£300.000 Student loan Or Debts, Credit Card
£200 Food and house hold products
£100 Cinema, going out, snacks, family out (I’m being generous here. Many don’t do even this)
£30.00 Gym membership that Dave paid but gave up to go because of being “busy.”

Total left = £188.13
Ever had 50 bucks mate. Ever see that 50 bucks last one week, never mind three days? Yeah, now you get me. A pint of milk there, a bus drive here, petrol in a car there and sweets for kids here and suddenly...
"Where is the 50 bucks man! Where?"
If we keep the reciepts, which I'd advise you do, you'd know. Or even better. Use a card and it will reveal all the expenses, your accountant can easily sort out for your books!
So £188.13 needs to last until the end of the month when the next wages comes in. It won't last for that long. Maybe in first week or second. Maybe in the first few days, it's gone.
By that time, he will be spending some on drinking and clubbing to forget. Maybe even some cigarettes too. Maybe in a book he got so emotional tangled with because it says..
"Make money NOW and never be in debt again!" Or whatever emotional headlines he reads.
I have also seen Dave to be a man who isn't excited about the wages anymore. He's thinking of others ways or as he once said to me...
"Adam. You know that THINGY you are doing!"
"Thingy?" I replied.
"Yeah, that Thingy!"
"Well Dave, are you doing that THING too?"
"What THING?"
"You know that thingy."
"Eh? You mean..erm, job."
"Oh, it's called a job is it? I thought it was called THINGY."
"Ok, you got me. I meant your...Business. You still doing business Adam?"
"Oooh, I see Dave. Well, it's my business. Not a hobby you set up and do when you feel like it and quit when it doesn't go your way. Am I right Dave?
"Erm, yes. So how is it going?"
Dave didn't like the vision of forty years cycyle and the way the tax man steps in and just takes. Thats if he doesn’t change from one company to another because no job is secure.
Yes, I use to wait for this invisible person called Tax Man. I'd wait at the bottom of my steps. When the pay slips came through the post. I'd be ready to grab him by the kneck and tell him what for. I even waited outside the bank.
The thing is, the taxman or woman was just too darn fast. Maybe they took some extra dose of vitamins or something. But I promised either I get hold this person or I'd find a way to not steal my monies just like that, and I have a big say in it.
As for Dave. He got smart. He decided to not put his eggs in one basket. No, he figured out that it is better to get 1% from a 100 sources instead of 100% from one job or business. No more talk with me on...
"Hey, are you still doing that..
I quickly add, "What Dave? The Thingy?"
"No, no. The business." He replied.
Funny how people find respect and talk in a certain level of integrity when truth gives them a pet talk. Now, my thingy to Dave is a business. Go figure.
