Don't Be As Dumb As An Elephant?

Hello to all!  If you've read The Success Principles by Jack Canfield, this may sound familiar.  Mr. Canfield compares us staying in our comfort zones to the way a baby elephant is trained at birth--by being tethered to a rope that is secured to a wooden post buried in the ground.  Although the baby elephant will try to break free, it soon realizes its limitations and gives in to its "destiny".  Sadly, after this baby elephant grows into a powerful 5-ton beast, it still remembers the limitations placed on it as a baby--and while it could literally rip free from the rope with very little effort, it doesn't even try.

Mr. Canfield then states "perhaps this describes you--still trapped in a comfort zone by something as puny and weak as the small rope and stake that controls the elephant, except your rope is made up of the limiting beliefs and images that you received and took on when you were young."  He goes on to say that if this describes us, the good news is that we can change that "comfort zone" and stretch ourselves by:

1. Using affirmations and positive self-talk,
2. Creating powerful new internal images of having, doing and being what we want, and
3. By simply changing our behavior!

Powerful concept--I would just like to know why we aren't taught these things in school?!

The phenomenon is also

The phenomenon is also called learned helplessness. There have been many studies on the subject, a great book is Learned Optimism. The author was a pioneer in the field and the book has strategies to break the cycle.

Hi Lahai

Is this something that schools alone are supposed to teach or is it also a learned behavior from the environment in which you were raised.....

I believe it is a little of both.  I think a lot of emphasis is placed on the teachers of our school systems, here in the U.S. anyway, to be everything to the students going through those schools.  Society wants to know when things go bad, "Why weren't they taught that in school?"  And it refers to all kinds of issues...

But, what about the statement "What were you taught at home?"  A child, by the time they reach Kindergarten, already has some very strong characteristics engrained in them.  They are molded out of their environment in which they were raised between the ages of 0-5 years.

I believe what they learn in Kindergarten through 12th grade by the teachers, their interaction with social contacts/peers/friends at school and their parenting at home are what gives someone their Principles/Disciplines for the rest of their life.

Hope that all makes sense!

Thanks,

Dianne

I Agree...

...with all of the responses, here, and I appreciate the feedback!  Dianne--you are absolutely right, and I regret that I didn't delve into the "home nurturing" aspect more.  Fortunately, with these concepts being more readily available to the average person, the chances of parents learning about them are growing daily, and I envision concepts such as The Law of Attraction, stretching oneself, etc., having a snowballing effect!

Hi Lahai

Hi Lahai, Remembering my childhood, school days, home life, I would always try my best at everything I did so what evere I achieved I knew in myself I had done my best.

Today thoughts have changed, communities have been dummed down so much they follow the masses without a second thought.

It's time to wake them up and those with children take note to.

Thanks for the post

We are all molded by our

We are all molded by our childhoods weather good or bad,I think the mistake most people make from this is blaming our childhoods for any short coming we may have.We all have our issues people always will, its weather you take action to correct these issues like the examples you gave in this post that ultimately matters the most.Always remember thoughts are things positive or negative

It would make all the difference!

If this were taught in school, it would be so advantageous!  We would have a lot less kids leaving school, that's for sure!  Kudos to the progressive schools who do!

All the Best,

Great Words

Learned behavior is hard to break. You have to have a clear mind and undo what binds you.

Great article keep up the good work.
