Effective Public Speaking Tips from a Professional Speaker - Dr. Orville Campbell, Part I
As someone who travels all over the country and makes a living as a free lance speaker, I see a lot of good speakers and bad and very bad speakers. Here are some tips that will enhance your oral presentations and give you the look of a credible leader.
1. Speak clearly. Don't mumble your words. clearly enunciate the first and last words of a sentence. Many times the most important information is wrapped up in the last words of the sentence.
2. Speak confidently with an upbeat tone. Make the audience believe that you know what you're talking about (and you should)
3. Know Your Slides: every diagram, every number, every sentence and every concept!
4. Speak to the audience, not to the screen or slide. Be interactive. The slides are a prop or reference. Do not Read Word for Word the presentation slide.
5. Make Eye Contact with people throughout the room. Don't just glance. Make everyone feel you are talking to him or her.
6. Use Humor. However use humor in good taste. Avoid political, racial and religious humor!
7. Speak with Passion or Conviction. This makes you more believeable and authentic.
8. Begin with a short quip or story that is relevant to the audience. I was speaking in St. Louis last night and I began with a story on how the Tennessee Titans (Nashville is my home) came up 1 yard short in beating the St. Louis Rams in 1999. Such stories allow you to immediately connect with your audience.
