Facebook to ban business?

Read More: Technology

What would you think if you saw this headline?  Just this morning, I got an e-mail from an acquaintance from the Chamber of Commerce in my town.  He thinks that Facebook was not built for business.  Here is one of his quotes: "The popularity of Facebook has many business and professional people embracing it as their social media solution. But using Facebook for business networking is like forcing a round peg into a square hole. Facebook was built for PERSONAL socializing, and we should keep it that way."

What do you think?!?

IMHO, I think he is not thinking outside the box.  There are so many opportunites in Facebook that it would be senselss to keep it purely social.  Plus, it is great to get to know people and what they are up to.  It is easier to meet their needs when we know what their lives are about.

Times Have Changed...

Predominantly, in the past, right back in the past, facebook was for social, friends etc. Like all things...times change and with it, a different direction too. it's used for business too..big time!

Face book has made the following:

  • Availability for companies to advertise and many do e.g. Face book Ads,
  • Creation of personal groups for entrepreneurs and companies
  • Check out Facebook Insight. It gather insights on who's engaging with your Facebook Pages and who's clicking on your Facebook Ads.

Facebook says:

"Facebook Platform enables you to create social applications that let users interact with their friends and your business." <<< note, it mentions business.

And, "Facebook offers more integrated advertsing opportunities to engage your target audience. We look forward to working with you and seeing your marketing initiatives come to life on Facebook."

So either I am looking at some new, facebook or the facebook we are talking about. Because the facebook I know, is geared big time for entrepreneurs as well. Not just personal.

Facebook has designed applications for business. Below is a link to show these applications.

Here's the application list for businesses, from facebook

Either is fine!

Whether you use Youtube for social reasons, or more business oriented reasons, who cares? Don't we have some freedom in this case to do whatever we want to do with our Facebook Profile? (granted that it's not explicit or illegal material)

I say as long as you are legitimate and honest, you've got nothing to worry about! Facebook is such a great way to connect with an unlimited potential of people. You can't email or sending out events to people you don't know, so what's the biggie?

That's my 2 cents :)

Quite the Dilemma!

Alicia, you posted a very interesting question. About six months ago, I converted my facebook account into a business account. I dumped all my "friends" and built up a legion of business contacts.

Two observations - first, I got spammed to death, second, I missed my friends and checking in on their daily garbage. Not one business contact was as much fun as finding an old class mate from 30 years ago. There is obviously a formula for doing business through facebook but so far it hasn't been fun.

A different shade of light

Alicia,

I also thought that facebook was for social applications to interact with friends rather than for business.   Everyone that I've spoken to have also come to the same conclusion.  But,  I see that some people have had success and that is why we have to see things in a different shade of light.   What may work for one may not necessarily work for another or vice versa.

Thanks,

Freddy Pilar

Great Title Alicia

It got me to click. I think Facebook is great for both personal and business. I went from not even wanting to have my last name posted when my neice first invited me on to now I'm on almost daily. Its a great way to stay in touch with family and friends and it is also an excellent business tool.

Thanks Irene!

I appreciate your message. I am fairly new to the network and I am always trying to think about the kind of titles that would catch someone's eye. I am glad it caught yours....I'm getting better! :)

Facebook's policy on Network marketing

Facebook says they are open to Business ads, but they have a very Narrow View on Network Marketing ... if you look at their Policy Statement they consider Network Marketing a Pyramid Scheme and will not allow any advertizeing what so ever in regards to any Network Marketing company.... and there is no debating with them ... try and get a Customer Service person .... good luck

The Return Of The ..giver, facebook

The thing is there are better ways now to do what one needs to do in face book, than advertising. One of them, which is one powerful, is creating a group to..

  • Give valuable content to people who need training
  • The comment box is there and they can engage, and one can ask what they want because you can put video up, share valuable content, and ask what they want to learn.
  • The more you give quality, the more it grows as well as trust in yourself.

The wierd thing is, since I ignored family, friends in a way, to not invite them in business, they now want to get in the group hahahaha. Go figure.

Cool by me because now they see what I am doing without me chasing them, which I never have anyway.

There are quiet a few mlm companies on there and they've been there for sometime. It's when people abuse it, that Facebook gets them for it.

The World is Flat

According to Arthur Thomas L. Friedman.  Globalization has now shifted to warp speeds.  Business are no longer done the old fashion way like cold calling.  Technology and communications are moving very swiftly.   But as far as facebook is concern,  there is a huge demand for it especially by the younger generation.  Am I right about that? if anyone can comment please do so.

FaceBook- a nice mix of business and personal

Hi

What I've really enjoyed about Facebook is that it combines business with personal. So, you can see someone's profile, get to know them a little and see the kinds of things they're interested in.

The wall feature doesn't distinguish between business or friendships, and I find I am having a nice mix of keeping up with my friends as well as receiving interesting communications from new business connections.

I think getting to know someone in a different context to purely business, adds the social side- and it makes it much more fun to network.

And if I saw the headline "Facebook to ban business?" I'd be most unhappy. I am making nice connections and enjoying it!
