Finding your own profitable niche market

The first lesson any budding Internet marketer should learn is how to identify profitable niche markets and the products within those markets. The most common mistake committed by novice online entrepreneurs is deciding to market a product without doing the proper market research and determining the level of market demand. This can be extremely risky because the product you have in mind might not be in demand within the niche market being targeted. Without demand for the product being marketed there would be few if any sales made and that would surely be disastrous for any business.

Despite how intimidating this subject may sound it’s actually quite easy once you understand some basic principles. It all starts with an idea and blossums from there. This idea can come to you at any time… while watching a movie, reading a book, taking a walk etc… It might even be inspired by your current or previous profession, or a hobby you enjoyed when you were young. It is recommended that you carry some method of recording your ideas in real time, a small notebook, PDA or digital recorder etc.

So how would you know if the idea that enters your mind is the right one to build a business around? This isn’t as difficult to figure out as you might think. Any idea you come up with could easily be expanded into various possibilities. An idea about pets might make you think of marketing pet care products and services online for example. Or an idea about orgainic gardening might lead you to thoughts of a “How To” Organic Gardening eBook.

Once you have an idea you need to determine its possible profitability by using a good keyword research tool. Some of the possibilities include Wordtracker, Word Butler, Keyword Discovery among others.

Simply type in words that define what you have in mind and press the submit button. You will then be presented with a list of keywords and key phrases that are related to the subject you have entered. For each keyword or key phrase will most often also have an indication of the number of searches that they have gathered from internet users. The number of searches made for a particular keyword or key phrase is a good barometer of the niche market demand for that keyword phrase.

You might think that you would want a keyword or key phrase that has many monthly searches but that is not necessarily the case. Demand is just half the equation. You would also need to determine the number of competitors you would have within that particular market. You can do this by running a search using the particular keyword or key phrase you have selected. Look at the number of web pages dedicated to the said subject. If this number is less than the number of searches made for the same then you just might have a profitable idea.

Analyzing our above idea about pet care and using the tools mentioned above you would type in the phrase “pet care”.

You’d immediately be presented with some keywords or key phrases like “pet grooming” or “pet names.” If the searches for these terms are greater in number than the web pages catering to them you could consider them as possible profitable markets. These markets are what many people refer to as niches. Finding a niche is the first crucial step in making money online.

Once you decide on a niche market you must focus on it until you have created a profit making system that requires a minimum of your time. If you’re not very familiar with the subject matter then some research is required. Build a website that would provide accurate and educational information about the topic. Spend the time to employ on and offline marketing strategies to give it the exposure it deserves and you will be well on your way to realizing the great potential that niche marketing allows.
