Getting your blog to the top of the search engines is a main goal of many people online.  However before you can even be considered to be near the top of the search engines, your site needs to be indexed first.  Now if you have just started your blog, you should not expect to see your blog indexed on google immediately.  It does take some time to get indexed, so do not worry if your site is not showing up after a few days or even a couple of weeks.

Step 1: Use Google Apps

Google offers a wide variety of applications that not only help your website, but also help with getting your site indexed. I believe that if you are using googles application in conjunction with your websites, this will help expedite the indexing process. Another good thing is all of these Google Applications are free to use!

Step 2: Get Quality Backlinks

Many people make the mistake of trying to get as many links to their site as possible when that is the last thing you should do.  If you do that, google will most likely see you as a spam site or in another words a link farm.  You do not want to be labeled as a link farm by google.  If you do, there is a very good chance that your site will become blacklisted by google and not even get indexed.  So the key is quality over quantity.

So how do you do this?

The first thing you need to determine is what niche are you in?  What I mean by this is find out what your blog is really about.  Once you figure that out, then go out in search of other blogs and directories to submit your link to.  If these blogs are related to yours, it will really help your view to google.  Also be sure to try and get blogs/websites with a google pagerank of 2+.

Step 3: Using authority websites

Getting a link back to your site from a top level site can help up your indexing time. I like to use popular social networking sites to help achieve this such as:

Backlinks are great for your blog (or any site). If you want to get backlinks on similar blogs, check out Comment Sniper - monitors blogs of your choosing, and notifies you instantly when a new post is made, letting you head on over and be the first one to comment.

Not only helps with getting the backlinks, but the closer your comments are to the top of the list, the more chance there is that visitors will click the link back to your site. :)

Great Info

I am just starting a blog and really don't have a clue what to blog about.  Maybe the autobiography of an internet newbie!  That should get some laughs anyway, with all the mistakes I make!  I have lot's of firsthand experience on what not to do!

Thanks & Quick Question?

Thanks for all the great info.

Quick question, I had been told to use Ping-o-Matic to notify the search engine that my blog (wordpress.com) has new content.  Is that still necessary?  When i submit it there it comes up with a "No Blog URL?" Do you know what that means? I've tried researching it, but I haven't had any luck.
