Greener Pastures

Read More: Discipline  |  Personal Development

There are currently over 3000 network marketing companies, give or take a few. Every one bills itself as the hottest new company and the best opportunity.   If you are an active networker, you will be approached to join some of these other companies. It will be very tempting for both you and your downline to jump over to the greener pastures. In my nearly thirty years in this industry, I can tell you that in most cases that would be a tragic mistake, because in another couple months another "best in the world" company will come along that looks even better. You will spend all your time getting started, which is the toughest phase of building a network.

If you are with a company that has been in business more than 2 years; is financially sound; has professional looking marketing and training materials; is shipping products and paying commissions consistently; and has a reputable management team; then you are with a solid company. Now the question is, are you happy? If you aren't, is it because of something the company has done or are you not doing everything you could do to become successful? If you aren't prospecting and retailing every day, training your new distributors, and persistently building a business, then it won't be any different anywhere else. If you are with a good company and aren't succeeding, ask your best upline leader to help you analyze why. Typically it is something you are doing during one of the steps. Maybe you aren't prospecting enough people.  It could be that when you give a presentation it is too long or too short or doesn't have enough umph. Possibly you aren't closing or don't handle the common objections effectively. Maybe follow-up is your hang-up. If people join your team and then don't do anything, it's probably your training and support that is weak. In any case, the answer is not another company, but rather another way of doing things. Look in your own pasture first. I'm sure that you will find that the grass is very green right at home.===============================================================Rod Nichols has been involved in the network marketing industry since 1979, as a company founder/owner, distributor, consultant, trainer, coach, and author. Excellent Information

I myself have just jumped into the MLM industry.  I am a distributor for an awesome company.  They are going out of their way with marketing.  This article helped me realize that all I need to do is learn the correct skills and work smart and hard and I will succeed. Another important point I liked about this article is the importance of not giving up. The U.S. Army and four times overseas and three wars have ingrained in me not to give up. Thank you for the advice.

Oh So True!

I definitely agree with you on this Rod - and even though I was subconsciously aware of this "problem" before, I somehow managed to simply ignore its existence for many years (whilst "dabbling" with various MLM programmes) and still searched for the newest, latest, best etc.  What a waste of time and energy!

The crucial point for me now, is to find something you LIKE (get involved with something that you personally would do, or eat, or use, or buy on a regular basis) even if it was not part of an MLM opportunity - and then you are more likely to stick with it, despite whatever else comes around.

Thanks for highlighting this problem Rod. It should make all of us think a little bit more about what we do.

I know I always tell

I know I always tell people.

The Grass isn't Always Greener on the Other Side.

You'll take to that company what you did in the first one.

It's the person that has to develop not the company that needs to change.

There is always the one that proves the rule.

IF you are an addict to startups and building the business... or love struck by those who take huge downlines along with them and have everyone believe THIS TIME IT Will be different, you will disagree with Rod. There are names to look out for. I won't name names but contact me and ask.  Is your upline part of the grass is greener group?  Know before you end up with no upline and no support. Been there.

I've heard the expression

I've heard the expression the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, but what most fail to realize is that if you water your own grass, it will be green too!  Thank you for this great article and making it so simple!

I Must Say one thing.

I Must Say one thing,  You Need to Educate Your Self  About Any Company you join.  Unless you are doing this Industry as a Hobby or for Fun.  You need the answers to these Important Questions.

Does my Company have Products at a Price that is Reasonable in Todays Market?

If its products are overpriced how will you retail?

How many people do I need in my organization on auto ship of 150.00 in product to make a residual of say 10,000.00 a month.

What are my P@P's  and do I understand them.  This is were you Find out if you are working with a Company of Integrity. All Companies clam Integrity but the Truth is in the P&P's .  Your friend For Life Juanita Waterman

Wherever you go, there you are.

I don't know who coined this phrase, but I got it back in the 80's from a cult film called "Buckaroo Bonzai".

You can move around all you want, but you still have to take "you" with you. If "you" haven't changed, then you're destined to keep re-creating the same dramas in your life over and over.

Network Marketing isn't the only place where people go in search of greener pastures. How often have you seen people move to a new town, city, country, etc, to make a "fresh start". How often do people cheat on their spouses because they think that an exciting new partner is the answer to their marital problems? If you don't change the inside, outside changes aren't going to help. I think you guys get the picture...

Brill Post

People who search for something never get it. Rule of thumb. If you act as if you don't have it Now, then you will experience more lack! The NOW is all there is. Time is a paradox and because of this it can be said that 'the future' does not exist...we never get to the future and only ever experience it as the Present moment! The future only exists as a thought!

Work On The Better YOU!

This is an excellent post Rod, most networkers don't look in the mirror and find what they are lacking. Its all about who you are, not who you represent. If people don't like you, they won't do business with you no matter what company your in. Always work on a better YOU. I did that for years, I jumped from business to business expecting that miracle only to find, I had the same result (failure).I did that for at least 5 years. If I spent one quarter of that time bettering myself instead, I would have saved a lot of frustration and hords of money,  and I could have had success within that 5 years.

MLMs

Hi Gang,

I've realized that longevity in a business required several things to happen.

MLM or Conventional business - business is business is business!!

Doesn't matter what you are in. As long as some basic things are in place, and have been in place for awhile, you have a chance to make something out of it.

Have a great day.

As Green As It Gets

So true. So true. The grass will always be as green as it gets. I love the MLM business and I've hopped around a bit, but I've come to realise that what has been missing was the will to dig in and stay. The more I commit, the greener the grass gets. Thanks for the encouragement.

It's All About YOU!

Good leadership is about good following. It's not about your upline and it's not about your downline. It's about YOU! GROW yourself to grow the biz. Get a good company and do it! NIKE...

Consistancy is Key

Consistancy is key! If you know the Company you are in is sound, then all that may be lacking is consistancy. Stick with it, work through it and motivate your mind and actions. Success depends on this mind set.

If I had a dollar for

If I had a dollar for every time someone told me their company was positioned to take advantage of "a perfect storm" I wouldn't need to be in a mlm.

If you are a loser with company A, you will probably be a loser with company B so stop being a loser and you can succeed with any company A-Z.

There is green and then there is green

Emotion - the #1 decision making factor in joining a new business. The recruiter sounds great, introduces you to their company which sounds great and you sign up - based on emotion. The grass looks pretty green.
Your upline shows you the ropes, tells you to work consistently and you will have success.
Sounds good. You can do that.
HOWEVER at one point if you haven't attained the pin level or income level you thought you were going to be at it is TIME to look around.
The grass may very well be greener over there.
The number 1 reason - compensation plans. You may have personally reached a great level of leadership skills, PD etc. however if your compensation plan is not geared to be "psychologically encouraging" to the new recruits you will lose them and you will always be in recruiting mode. They need to be making money the first month, more the second etc. and they need the skills to be able to do that. Too often I have seen compensation plans that are "discouraging". Massive breakaways built into the plans early in the process - discouraging. Balancing legs - discouraging. Improper placement within the matrix - discouraging.
New recruits should have one thing to focus on - presenting their opportunity/products and everything they do requires some form of financial compensation. The upline should also be financially rewarded for training the new recruit and so on. Encouraging every step of the way for everyone. Your retention levels remain high and your business grows. That's success and it's pretty green. In fact a lot greener than a lot of opportunities offer.
Look for the green in the green !
To your success,
