How I Won An SEO Networker Scholarship - Go Ahead and STEAL My Secrets...

I'm a full time internet entrepreneur... but not by choice???

"What sense does THAT make," you say.  "I mean, isn't that the dream that we all want? ... to work from home without the stress of a boss?"

Sure.  But I didn't arrive at this position by making my first million bucks... or even making $100k online.

I had been working for the last year with a large construction company as a design/sales consultant...  and with the current economy, not too many people are looking to buy... and the people that DO want to by, very few are getting approved for credit or they're not getting approved at the interest rate they wanted.

Needless to say, at a 100% commissioned job... it was a tough 2008.

The good news is I've been online since December of 2007.  I've bought thousands of dollars of courses, marketing software, keyword software, and much more...  I've been able to make some decent money online.  Just enough to be able to pay my bills and not get TOTALLY stressed out.

But I just have NOT taken it to the next level yet.  It seemed that once I fought, and worked, and (in many cases) paid to get traffic to my site...  the only way to get MORE traffic was to go through the same work or just PAY MORE to get it.

I knew that Search Engine Optimization (getting my websites to the 'organic' search engine results) would give me the visibilty and credibility I needed to increase traffic, conversions, and sales.

I have an engineering degree, so naturally I'm savvy when it comes to technical stuff...  But no matter what I did, I had no idea WHY some of my videos would make it to the top of the search engines, while others were no where in the results.  The same goes for my blogs, articles, and more...

When I heard that Raymond Fong and Ferny Ceballos were putting out SEO Networker, I just HAD to have it.  I immediately clicked on the link to their site...  Honestly, I didn't even read their 'purdy' sales page!  I just scrolled down, credit card in hand, ready to buy... (If you don't know Ray and Ferny, take notice- they KNOW what they're talking about when it comes to getting organic search results and traffic...)

And when I got down to the "buy now" button, my heart stopped.  It was just "too much money"... which just means I was too broke to buy it, but I fully knew it was worth every penny...  So, instead of whining and coming up with excuses.. I began to work diligently to make more sales online, and make more sales at my sales job. 

Just when I thought I was another week away from getting the funds together, my wife lost her job as a teacher and we were back to living off of our savings and whatever cash I could bring in online.  (My wife knew it was coming as she was only filling in for another teacher on maternity leave this year.. She's starting a family day care, but not for another month... ANYWAYS...)

So when I say I became a full time work-at-home entrepreneur, it wasn't because I was pulling in tens of thousands a month in my business... it was because if I DIDN'T figure this stuff out I would have been on food stamps, watching my cars get repo'd, and watching my credit rating go down the toilet...  And to me, I'd rather have to work my %&# off on my own business to make ends meet, than devote my time to finding another dead-end job that will barely pay my bills...

So, here I was just HUNGRY to get my hands on this opportunity... but I was stuck between making sure I could live comfortably with the online profits I've been making... and risking the very home I live in, bad credit scores, and maybe even bankruptcy...)

Then I got an email from Ray and Ferny talking about a scholarship opportunity for SEO Networker.  I was FLOORED.  I listened to their video describing what they were looking for in the application probably 5 times.  I took notes.  I brainstormed how I could do this.

They wanted me to submit a site, tell them how I SEO'd it, and tell them why I think I should win.

I already had a domain name with a blog installed on it that was only 2 weeks old, so I thought "might as well start fresh and see what I can do with this site!"

So I got to work - and FAST.

The first thing I did was do some keyword research.  The blog was directed at my primary business opportunity, but I'm not here to promote that so let's just call it "XYZ company".

I opened up my copy of Micro Niche Finder and typed in XYZ company.  I found results that got some decent traffic (100-200 searches per month) but weren't terribly competitve and wrote them down.  This is one of the most important things you can do is find a topic as well as a good target market.  Then find terms that that target market will search for about that topic.

This is where "siloing" comes in.  I divided my blog into differnet categories... namely, THOSE KEYWORDS I MENTIONED ABOVE!

Then I went to work creating content specific to fit those categories, and posting them on my blog.

I would choose my titles based on what keywords I was targetting, and then use those keywords in the beginning and end of that post.  I would also change the meta keywords and description for each post using the All-in-One SEO plugin.

I also changed some of the code for the plugin to make the titles h1 headers.. (see the video)

I then started to add content on web 2.0 sites, and send links back to my blog.

I probably put a solid 20-30 hours of work in to it... just learning new skills, applying them, adding content, creating videos, and more.  And it won me a scholarship!

(( And the same day I won the scholarship, my wife told me that she's pregnant and we can expect our first child in September!  So now I've got even MORE motivation to see this through! ))
