How to leave a great Voicemail Message
Voicemail or answering machine messages are easy. Most people have difficulty with them because no one has ever taught them the six important steps. They are very simple and with a few minutes of practice, they will become natural for you.
Just so you know, I asked my wife out for our first date on her answering machine. It was an awful, rambling message and I can’t believe she called me back. I think it was out of pity because it surely was not because of the quality of the message.
Step 1: Don’t ramble. Keep your message short, less than 20 seconds is ideal.
Step 2: Preplan your message. If they answer, you should know what you are going to say. It is the same thing if you get a voicemail. Make a script or at least an outline to read from the first few times you do this. And practice your message at least three times before you call. It will take the nevousness out of your voice and help you feel more calm.
Step 3: Smile. You may not believe it but your tone changes when you smile. Try it sometime on the phone. Listen to the person you are talking with and I bet you will know when they are smiling.
Step 4: Speak clearly and slowly. If I have to decipher a person’s name of phone number, it is annoying and unprofessional.
Step 5: Make it intriguing. I will call the interesting person back every time. The boring person who is surely not smiling and give me too much information will not get called.
Step 6: Create urgency. The person you want to talk to is in the right frame of mind. Make sure you talk to them before they change their emotional state or forget that they filled out your information request in the first place.
Here is an example of a concise, preplanned, smiling message that is intriguing and doesn’t give away the farm. “Hi, this is Brent Miller from YourLifeofCash.com. You filled out an information request earlier today but before I can send you the email, I need to ask you two simple questions. Call me at 913-461-5866. I only have a few free editions left so please call soon. Once again, Brent Miller, 913-461-5866.”
Another option might be, “Hello, I’m answering your request for a follow-up phone call from YourLifeofCash.com. I look forward to hearing your questions. My name is Brent Miller and you can reach me this afternoon directly at 913-461-5866.”

Leaving A Great Voice Mail Message
Brent, this was well said. I do support what you are saying. And, IF you do leave a message the message you shared with us in your post is very appropriate (I personally feel). Having been coached in prospecting thru my real estate coach, prior to now shifting gears to my online business - my coach often brought up the issue of not leaving a message. I actualy was taught to NOT leave a message. Talk and concentrate only on those who answer the phone and do not take up our time leaving messages. Because, the return of ratio of left messages is very low (I can't remember the stats). But, I would get zero returns, if 1-2. So - I have actually been taught to not leave messages. But, the truth be known, I personally go ahead and do leave messages. This is something I may stop doing, and concentrate only on those who pick up. Because I simply never get returns.

Well said, also repeating
Well said, also repeating your phone number twice and making sure to give the person a reason to call you back are good ideas.
