Internet Marketing for Smart Beginners
Why do I say internet marketing for smart beginners?
Because by being here at BetterNetworker you have already demonstrated that you are an intelligent business builder.
One of the biggest challenges for beginners in internet marketing to overcome is the idea that, because they are new to the industry, or at least to internet marketing, that they have nothing to offer.
And yet, by taking baby steps in your own development, you are in a unique position to teach those baby steps to others.
Have you ever attended a presentation by one of our brilliant minds as they presented a complicated concept only to find the discussion was entirely over your head? Some teachers are very good at beginning from the learner's current understanding and then building on that knowledge. Unfortunately, many are not.
One of the things that happens in internet marketing and elsewhere is that as the techniques and processes become more and more familiar, we lose sight of how complicated they once were to us.
As a beginner, this is all still very fresh in your mind. If you start using industry terms like "writing copy" you are less likely to assume your readers will not confuse this with copyrighting. You will take the time to offer a more thorough explanation when you are passing on new knowledge, because you still remember the questions that popped up for you.
Internet marketing for smart beginners is a great place to be. With more and more people desperately searching for new ways to create income for themselves turning to the internet, there is a tremendous need for those who are willing to share what they have learned. Even the beginners.
This will carry over to your phone calls to prospects. Using the phone strikes terror into the hearts of many beginning marketers. It may be helpful to remember that no matter where you are in your journey, there are always going to be those more experienced, and those less experienced. And that will never change!
A recent client shared a wonderful illustration of how advanced material was broken down to the beginner's level.
I am studying with a top industry coach, Christian Mickelsen, in helping people grow their businesses as well as teaching other coaches.
- Our last session involved a complicated discussion on dealing with several "tough questions" asked by clients.
- I turned around and taught three of the top ideas to my client, tailoring the discussion to her current challenges.
- The next day, she was able to use one of those ideas as she was helping one of her internet marketing beginners.
- The beginner now felt that she had material which she could write about on her blog or discuss at a social networking site.
This chain of learning goes up and down. In this case, the knowledge was passed from the most experienced down the line. Each time the material was passed on, it was in a more fundamental format to fit the experience of the learner. Yet, at any time, the experience can travel back up the line.
If the internet marketing beginner (smart beginner, mind you since she is actively developing her skills), has a question her coach/mentor/upline cannot answer; the question would travel upwards until reaching the person who has the answer.
You're not alone in this business. If you are an internet marketer smart beginner, you know it is okay when you don't know all the answers. Why? Because you know where to find out!
In the meantime, you can share with your readers from a unique position because you are still one of them. If you are a really smart beginner, you'll never allow that to change. You'll always be one of them by staying in close touch with their wants, needs, desires and challenges.
The person you help to learn how to use BetterNetworker, for example, will be just as grateful today as they will be later when you teach them how to build a website of their own.
If you want to help the most people, start where they are. Now that's being a smart beginner!

Smart Teacher
You've made some great points here Barbara. And I agree with you that teaching and learning is a two-way street.
When you pass on learning to the clients you work with, and in turn, they pass that on to the people they're working with, you're empowering their ability to lead. And if there is one thing that will build your business, it's leadership (both personal leadership as well as leading others).
But it goes even further than that...when you position yourself to accept the lessons that your students have to offer, you immediately have a connection that is much stronger than what would be a traditional one-way experience.
The best teachers will always be the best learners.
Eric Walker - the natural leader
Thanks Eric. As always you and I are on the same page. This is one business where it can be a great thing when the student surpasses the teacher. In the corporate world, this could be seen as a threat. In network marketing, you have yet another resource. By gathering the people around you who are better than you are in various areas, everyone wins. And I hope none of us forget how much we can learn from our newest business partners - a fresh take on things can be the key that unlocks a seemingly insurmountable problem! Hats off to Newbies!
Relationship is the Incubator
Hi Barbara
I couln't agree with you more about "starting where people are". Everyone comes into the mix with different viewpoints, skill sets, experiences and capacities to learn. And often too, people are rather shy at coming forward and revealing exactly what their problems are and how little or how much they know.
Establishing trust and an empathic and non judgemental approach to your clients (and potential clients) is so important, so they can relax and really open their minds to the teaching and reveal what it is they are needing.
And this is a subtle thing: Sure everyone says they'll help, but the ones that follow through helping their newbies step by step show a committment and staying power that is greatly appreciated, builds long term relationships and helps you grow as a leader in the process.
It reminds me of my days as a National Gymnastics Coach. I taught the most advanced kids, but also the baby beginners. And each had their own challenges and required a different specialised set of skills.
But no matter what level the student was at, the teacher-student relationship was the key. I believe it to be the incubator in which the learning and teaching takes place.
I think this is what makes the easy two- way flow of information between coach and student.
And it's a committment. An ongoing process of learning and teaching. That's why I like BetterNetworker. It's a hot-bed of Guru's and Newbies. A wonderful place to find your teachers and find your students.
Tania
PS I know exactly what you mean in your example given about your beginner internet marketer! Wink wink.
Don't for get the SMART beginner!
Tania, thanks to you for sharing the story which inspired this article. If there's one point I hope make is that with the right tools, training, and movtivation the newest of the new can begin offering value to others. So many are afraid to make their first move in reaching out because they have no IDEA how much they can actually offer. Here at BN, there is an environment which encourages the beginners to seek information, ask questions, learn the right way to build relationships and contribute. I would be shocked if anyone here was negative to a newcomer -- we were all new once!
Great article, Barbara!
Great article, Barbara! You're right on target.
Most new network marketers don't think they have anything to contribute on a website such as BetterNetworker. However, as they begin to learn, they can turn around and teach even newer people coming into this business.
A new network marketer, having learned answers to questions they have, can then teach a brand new network marketer who is seeking answers to those exact questions.
I hope that all new network marketers will feel empowered to do this on BetterNetworker.
Barbara, I wish you the very best.

Empowering Newbies!
Thanks Scott, I feel so strongly about this and want very deeply to help newcomers find their special talents and help them share their knowledge. By working together, we all become stronger.
Happy holidays to you and yours!
Barbara
From a 'seasoned Newbie'
Barbara,
Another great article! I've been involved with my opportunity for about 15 months and can certainly relate. I've actually taken 'a step back' to learn more about the industry in general. I'm currently going through BN.com blogs and Mike Dillard's courses.
Thanks Again,
David Meyer
