The myth of distance sponsoring
A little while ago we were supporting a tasting party for some of our local downline here in Phoenix. One of the Gold executives (30K-40K a year or so) was saying he wouldn't even look at recruiting online because he felt it was impossible to retain distributors over a distance.
Based on things I've seen and learned in recent times I can safely say he couldn't have been further from the truth... and losing out on more opportunity than he could even dream of.
Positioning yourself as a leader and staying in contact with your downline can be facilitated by a host of internet tools that, with your personal touch, can be very effective. The method of choice is using an autoresponder. Some of you may not even know what that is exactly. Fear not, it's not as complicated as you might think. It is a series of pre-written emails that you've written and that are being distributed at a predetermined interval, like a newsletter. People sign up for your newsletter at a signup or capture page (it "captures" contact information for you to build a marketing list with; you then market to that list). Of course the autoresponder is just a part of a marketing machine that you will have to construct over time, but you get the picture.
If you learn to write compelling and interesting copy you can create loyalty and devoted readers. Once you position yourself as a leader (an art in itself), they will one day follow you from one opportunity to another. This is where our primal instinct comes into play; we all follow someone or something, it's in our nature and it's NOT a matter of choice. Mike Dillard alluded to this in his book Magnetic Sponsoring. Now you just have to learn how to lead the pack hot stuff. :)
So the age-old person-to-person-only teachings of my opportunity and many others are limiting people to serious and fast growth. Ironically, the top distributors do use these techniques themselves, but do not actively teach others to. This is where I'm taking a different route and this is why I'm on this site today.

How right you are.
In todays world there just isn't enough time to do face to face meetings for everything. That is not duplicatable. Most all of my downline in my video company is so far away it is a different day right now. It is probably tomorrow there now. :) You can't build a distance business unless you pick up the phone or do webinars. People need to see you or hear your voice. You will have to coach people to leadership and you can't do that with autoresponders alone.
