John Berry - Can I appeal to your Abundance Mentality?
Allow me to introduce myself, I’m John Berry and I need your kindness. Please excuse this interruption, but as I said I need to ask for your favor.
As I went to pump my gas this morning, I realized I am on the verge of financial ruin. In that moment I accepted the reality – my job is not going to get it done. The sad thing is that I’ve got a pretty good job too. I’ve decided that rather than keeping this all to myself, I’m reaching out to you, your spirit of kindness, your generosity, and all the attributes that make up an abundance mentality. As someone experiencing success will you lend a hand to someone in need?
This is not a sales pitch and this is not a ploy, this is real. I have lots of real bills, I have real assets being repossessed, I have real foreclosure notices, and I am really on the verge of Bankruptcy. I think this could happen to anyone and if I had the opportunity, I would help them.
Take a look at my past few months:
I have been hit with an $180,000 lawsuit
Dex wants over $50,000 for yellow page listings that generated no business
I was forced to sell one of my homes at a loss just before foreclosure
My Assisted Living Van has been repossessed
My Concrete truck has been repossessed
The IRS levied my bank account
I have foreclosure notices for my home
I am constantly hounded by collection agencies
Am I smiling? Yes. Am I positive? Yes. Will I get through this? Yes. Can You Help Me? Yes.
Just one year ago you could have talked to me about my job and my businesses and I would have said everything was on track. Were there challenges yes, but nothing especially bad. My concrete delivery business, my assisted living homes, my real estate and rental property, online businesses, and all sorts of other things were fine. Fast forward to now and it’s a different story and I have to acknowledge that the walls are quickly caving in on me.
So what happened? Was I doing too many things? Was I not capable? Or could the same thing happen to you? Read and learn.
Longest Yard Concrete LLC
Longest Yard Concrete is still the top ranked website for categories on Google and Yahoo, out ranking much larger companies like YellowPages.com and Dex. I had great employees, high quality product, the latest equipment, and competitive prices. In fact LYC is still the only ready mix concrete company in the Phoenix metro area listed in the BBB directory. I constantly overcame adversary with LYC. My “partner” disappeared and left my holding the bag, the prices for materials went through the roof, a constant stream of new competitors opening in the area, all this and I was still holding my own. In 2008 however our challenges came from a virtually insurmountable source – the government and the media. The government is engaging in a campaign that has Diesel at over $4 per gallon. The media has everyone afraid to spend on anything housing related. Those two things are killers to small concrete businesses.
Sharon’s Adult Care
When I bought Sharon’s it had a number of outstanding qualities – the only 10 bed Assisted Living Home listed with the state in Chandler, Arizona; over a ten year legacy of warm, tender attention and care; located within a few miles of retirement communities; an owner who as a Christian testified about the daily traffic from neighbors because of the good standing Sharon’s had in the community. None of those things, true or false (and you can guess which one was a lie) has resulted in any success. To this day, I have yet to make a dollar off that home, but the owner insists on calling in payment of an additional $180,000 even though I already paid more than the home was probably ever worth thank to bogus appraising and loan practices.
Enter the IRS
I hope you never have the pleasure of opening up your bank account to find all you money gone. If you do don’t look around for some cyber criminal, look for the IRS. That’s what has happened to me. The IRS swoops in take the money – far in excess of what is owned, and leaves you to figure out how to pay employees, utility bills, groceries and all those little things.
The Van is Gone!
Of course all that isn’t enough, my bank decided to repossess my Assisted Living van, the same van that has over $7000 of custom wrap on it because the payments were behind. If you ever have a choice, I don’t know if I could really recommend Compass Bank by the way. So apparently they intend to sell my van at auction and leave me holding the bill for whatever else is due. I had never had anything repo’d so it was a new experience.
What the Concrete Truck too!
Yep! Literally, like the next day I get a call from a guy saying he’s taking the truck. Now these guys had a case for repo, I can’t blame them. Due to the slow business I had not made a payment for around 9 months, and they would still work with me. So yes, I would recommend Key Equipment Finance to anyone. When I looked at it I could not justify making the lease payment when I needed to buy materials, gas, pay workers, and oh yeah pay the mortgage.
Yes, there’s more but I won’t go on. If you read this far you need a little irony so here it is:
I am asking for your kindness and some would argue I’m here for being too kind.
I am asking for your trust and belief when yes I trusted and believed.
My financial world started to unravel primarily because of really two individuals, just two. You could include my “partner” that I mentioned before and that would make it three, but I got over him and say it’s really two. One is a former professional football player and minister. He leased one of my homes to conduct a business as an Assisted Living provider. Well all was going well when the payments stopped coming. Since we all have hard times I tried to work with him and he assured me he was going to catch it up. I know, anyone reading this who has owned a rental is saying no one ever catches up. So I was working with him, he assured me he would pay me. Then he got hard to reach on any phone. It got to the point that I told him honestly, the house was going to go into foreclosure. Again, he said he’d pay. He said the NFL owned him a lot of money and he would be able to make everything right. In the end, I lost my house, he helped ruin my credit, and cost me an extra $7000 plus for good measure, and today he can’t even answer his phone if I call. This was bad, but then there’s the second guy. He taught me that at the least:
The Secret is Real!
But that’s not the funny one, the second person was a roommate. When I met Mark, it was as my Chiropractor and he is a great Chiropractor. Unfortunately, that greatness does not spill over into his other endeavors. Anyway, as it turned out one day when I was getting adjusted he mentioned he was looking for a place to live or at least store some belongings. I mentioned that I had room at a home and he was welcome to keep some stuff there and I actually used to have a roommate. Once he saw the place he recognized that is was a smokin’ deal – beautiful home, large, private bath, internet, etc and I was hardly ever there all for a couple of hundred bucks for a room plus utilities. Long story short, he not only moved in, he moved a house worth of furniture in. I let him store stuff in the garage, use the office for patients. Great deal right? First rent was late – he thought his accountant was paying it. Then he was behind on the utilities. At about the time the lease was going to run out he decided to leave town and move back to Oregon, but he still owed for a years utilities, at least $3000. As he was leaving he assured me he was not trying to stiff me and that he fully intended to pay what he owed me.
So here’s where the Secret comes in. At the same time I had a bill collector calling me to get money for a Lowe’s card that LYC had used and it was about the same amount as he owed me. After several heated discussions they asked “Well, what can you pay?” and I responded that I could do around $150. Weeks later when Mark was long gone to Oregon I get a letter from his accountant. She had asked for a detailed breakdown of the bill before she could get an accurate amount. So I open the letter. Was it for my $3000 the he owned me? No.
It was $150.
There’s more to all this that I won’t even go into, but I won’t. I won’t talk about all the bill collectors that call everyday with the same question and get the same response. I guess it must be hard to understand that late fees are the least of my worries. To make a long story shorter I simply have concluded that my job is not going to get me out of all this. I have some plans in place and am exploring options, but at this point Bankruptcy looks imminent. And that brings me to you. While exploring options, I have come across other small businesses, sales programs, internet marketing programs, multi-level marketing programs, and more. Since I see so many people having success and I haven’t gotten there yet I decided to reach out to the community.
That brings us to today. I need money because I’m in financial trouble. I am not selling anything, and I’m not asking you do something you don’t agree with for whatever reason. I am simply making an appeal to your kindness and in return for your generosity I am not offering anything except heartfelt thanks for your kindness. I can say that it will not be forgotten.
If you truly believe that you give to receive here is your chance.
If you believe that what you give, comes back to you ten fold, here’s your chance.
If you embrace the concept that if you want to make money you should give some away, here is your chance.
As you can see I have some substantial financial challenges ahead of me,

$50,000 ad fees,
$40,000 Van
