Jonathan Budd's Twitter Contest is a Joke!
This morning, I received an email from Jonathan Budd. I follow the guy because I think he’s a great marketer, and I learn a lot from him. In the email, there was a link to a YouTube video announcing a contest that he was holding for his followers. The video went on to state that he will be paying out money to the person who gets the most clicks back to the same video.
Now, I know Jonathan. We met last year at a party thrown by Mike Dillard for some high-level marketers. I think he’s a great guy, and normally brings a lot of value to the community. But, I’m scratching my head on this one….
Jonathan my friend, where’s the VALUE? If the contest merely is to see who can get the most clicks back to the original video, then it’s really just an endless loop of nothingness! Now, there are thousands of your followers, putting out thousands of messages on Twitter and Facebook directing people to a video which does nothing to brand themselves….it only promotes YOU. It’s even a reach to condsider this “Entertaining,” one of the THE 4 E’s of Social Media. Hardly, a value proposition.
Sorry, Jonathan. I’m sitting this one out. I don’t need the cash that badly. I’m going to focus on providing value to the community. Knowing you, I’m certain you’ll be right back at the value game tomorrow. I’m hoping this is only a temporary lapse in your judgement, as I know you to be one of the great leaders of our industry.
Best,
Shecky

Ok, how was that a reply? Jeff , this does not refer to you dude! Yes, I agree . Jeff carrying on about your normal day was the way to go. -BAC
Agreed..
Interesting and I have to agree.
I would focus on creating value Jeff. Focus on what you said - value. Create great content, maybe even some humour to also get a social buzz going but it has value too. Far too many on the hype on twitter and everything else. Most ain't making money to faff about chasing clicks.
Glad to see your focusing on value. Your team will benefit greately.

Jeff:
I participated in Jonathan's contest. It was all for fun.
J Budd simply felt like giving away some money... What's wrong with that?
Does everything online have to be so "serious" and "politically correct" so that it lines up with one of the "4 E's" of social media? Wouldn't a little pointless fun also fall into the "social" realm of the online community? I mean really, if it's just business all the time, where is the fun in that?
And who dictates these so called "guuidelines" about what IS or IS NOT ok in social media anyway? Diversity, uniqueness and being a little silly now and then should be embraced, just like real life.
When you talk of what people want, I know for a fact that they ARE NOT looking for SERIOUS when they get out of work at the end of the day. Most want to kick their shoes off, put their feet up and crack open an ice cold beer and forget all the "seriousness" they had to endure at their J.O.B.
So lighten up a little Jeff, and let us have some fun. Crack a beer for yourself while you're at it. Who knows you may just have a little fun yourself. =)
