Listening can be like dancing and playing the piano
Think about a dancer. A dancer does not pay attention to where his legs are going. Of course he is told to do exercise like walking or whatever to keep his legs strong, however he pays attention to the beat of the music. Lets say for quarter notes are one, two, three four and eight notes are one and two and three and four and. Thats what he focuses on, which is the beat.
A piano player does the same thing, he learns the song seperately and the beat. He does not hesitate or his audience will get off their chairs and leave.
Getting now to listening. You need to control your tone of voice when talking to your prospects. You need to adjust your tone of voice to his tone of voice. Talking too loud gets him to want to move away from you. also know when the conversation needs to come to an end. Don't extend it for two reasons. Too much talking gets the other person bored and may cause him to think that you are being a pushy sales type and second he does not feel like he is being listened to and being respected.
Do not try and think about what to say or else you sound like you stutter or not know what you are doing. Or else no one will want to work with you.

Great article Lawrence!
Thank you! Are you a dancer?
No I am not
I am not a dancer. But my childhood aquaintance is one and I have seen how she dances to the beat.
Wanna Be Dancer
Nice article! I have done both in my lifetime, now it is time to learn, really learn, to listen to people so that I can understand them better.

playing the piano
Lawrence,
I play the piano and can relate. I had to concentrate hard on hitting the right notes while I read the music. I prefer to play by ear. Hopefully I can 'play by ear' when it comes to listening to others. Using my ear more than my brain, as in trying to think of what I will say next. I have found in life that most people just want to get something off their chest and don't really want advice. So, lets use our ear when listening, trying to understand and get to know them instead of trying to offer our good advice. (give advice, but only if they ask).
Thanks Lawrence for your thoughts,
Lynn Jones
