A Little Help From My Friends - Prospecting Insights

Wading Through All The MLM Steps To Follow

Recently my friend and colleague Kathy and I were on a telephone conference call. We discussed our different styles of phone interviewing new prospects as they require clarity and more information.

In reviewing and taking account of my own prospecting skills, I noticed a pattern had changed. I felt clearer and firmer in asking questions when talking to prospects. When I first started my business, I was uncomfortable asking too many questions. But, questions give us knowledge about where the person is coming from. This is really key. Where are they coming from? Learn where they currently are in terms of education, carrer, and family.

It has helped to refine my approach in how committed the people are that I have been calling. Many come with highly developed skill in Network Marketing or research, understanding the techniques but lacking people skill or motivation.

As we continued our discussion we began to get a sense of our comfort level with prospects and how we approach our initial calls. I explained that some popular internet gurus teach in MLM training to give the prospect "30 seconds" to ask a few questions and decide if they would work with someone or not. Wow! These people have had years of experience in interviewing and learned what worked and didn't work. By understanding what they hear from the person on the phone saves themselves time. Deep listening you will find clues as to how ready your client is to move forward or not as well as blocks to overcome. This is a great tool.

This made me think what information I have gathered from my prospects, and how committed they are to learning. The more we talked, the more I saw my conditioning surface. Get To Know People - Help Them.

I asked Kathy..."Are we screening, as well as asking for information, before we fully commit, as well as they are?" Some other questions I wanted clarity about: What do we need from them? What do they need from us?

Kathy and I discovered how our own styles are both helping and hindering our success. Hearing one say the words out loud was an eye-opener.

So on our conference call, we begin to talk as though we were talking to a first call prospect, inquiring about Home-Based Business and MLM.

Here is the spontaneous Role Play Discussion we had that you may relate to in your step-by-step growth as you gain insight in your own interviewing prospects.

Q = Question, me the caller
A = Answer, prospect or client

A: Hello, how did you hear about our training?

Q: Saw your Ad on the Internet, Squidoo article, liked what I read, tell me more...How do you make money online with your Home-based business?

A: First, let me get an idea of what you want. Do you have any training in an online business?

Q: No, just want to make money.

A: Are you a patient and persistent person? Do you have any particular area you are interested in? What do you see as your target market? Are you willing to get some training to help you understand how to create a web presence? (wait for response)

Q: Target Market...What is that? Yes, is it expensive? How long does it take? When does the money start coming in?

A: Money is important as well as creating relationships where people get to know you and your products and services. Money is a by-product of these connections.

Most important is that you learn who you want to help. Do you know how to create a web presence? It takes some time -- 2 to 4 months, in your spare time or full time is quicker.

Q: Web presence? Don't I just get a web page and people find me?

A: It's that much easier if you have the knowledge and training or a system. Everything in life is a system from ABC's to college, learning a job, losing weight getting a house ready to move. The basics make all the rest better and easier. Although a web page is good, you can still make money without one.

Q: Really, how does that happen?

A: There are sites that let you promote things. The more knowledge you have and training, you will begin to see the value of helping others learn. There are steps that will help people find you. This is where you need knowledge to build ways to help people find you. It does take time to build your presence and then for people to find you.

A: I know some things, but when do I get the calls and contacts?

Q: That is part of the process. I'll help you, and with you doing your part of learning from the tutorials on how to build a web presence, you find the contacts and the money $$ will come in.

A: How soon can I do this?

Q: As soon as you like.

At this point the follow up appointment is made and Value is given.

Sorting through the questions prospects may have, realizing that I can ask "them" questions, and offer them something of value, helps reduce the fears that may creep into my emotions. The prospects themselves decide what they want, so the pressure is not on "me" and it does not all depend on my performance. The Attraction Marketing approach gives me the opportunity to still be of help to others and offer them an opportunity for them to make decisions and not chase the prospect.

As a hypnotherapist role playing and working in front of a mirror helped me as much as it has helped my clients. Using the same techniques that helpy.ed them achieve their goals.  A case of learning what you teach.  Enjoy.
