Skype is a downloadable software product that is available at Skype.com for free. Once you have it downloaded and installed on your computer you will be faced with selecting a few options regarding it's settings. For the most part you can leave everything just as is and it will run perfect.

1. You can get a Skype phone number that anyone can call and connect directly to you on your broadband service. Again the call is very clear. You get to pick a Skype phone number that is from the exchange that you live in so that your number relates to your location.. You can also pick a number that is from a different part of the country if you want to appear as if you were located in a different place than you are. This Skype number is an add on but comes at a very low price.

2. You can add normal calling options that allow you to call phones anywhere in the world using their normal phone number. Again, this is an add on that has a monthly price tag around $12.00, less if the geography is smaller than the entire world. You still have the ability to call anywhere in the world and as long as you are calling a land line phone, there won't be any additional fees. If you are going to be calling a cell phone let's say in the London, England area, then you would incur an additional cost, but it is very slight. You handle these kind of charges by placing a credit card on your account and then set an amount that is always available if you make a call like this. I set my charged limit at $12.00 so that I can guarantee that I never have a dropped call right in the middle of the call. I always ask for a Skype name from people in other parts of the world. This is a European product and is much more accepted in Europe than here in the states.

3. You get to have all of the normal features you would get with a normal land line phone that you are used to.. Call waiting, call forwarding, voice mail, being able to see the number that is calling you and if the number is in your calling contact list the name of the person calling. You can have an answering service with a message just like any other phone service you may be used to.

4. Skype also provides some additional services that you may not be used to. How about calling someone and having a call where you can hear them and see them. Yes, a Video-Voice call is free to anyone that you are calling Skype Name to Skype Name. I have actually called one of my sons on Thanksgiving and placed my laptop at the end of the dinner table. He did the same at his house and we had dinner together as a family. We enjoyed each other's laughs and conversations and best of all I got to visit with my grandchildren.. Very Cool!

5. You can record calls that you are making if you feel a need to do that. This service comes from a relatively inexpensive add on to Skype. There are many add on products to enhance your Skype system.. Just search for Skype Add ons and I bet you will be stunned. Recording some calls where you are talking business is very useful. You can go back and listen to the conversation and improve upon the words and examples you use.

You have a few equipment needs to be able to use Skype effectively. You need a microphone that will transmit your voice over the broadband. Most new Laptops come with a webcam and microphone built in that works very well with the system. You can also buy a webcam that has a microphone built into it. I have that installed on my main desktop computer. I recommend that you buy Lodgitech equipment. It always seems to integrate with Skype effortlessly. If you don't want to do video conversations and you need a microphone you can get a headset with the speakers and microphone built in. I recommend getting a USB headset so you don't have issues with plugs. This is kinda nice when you want to have a private conversation or maybe a call that does not disturb others around as much.

When you are ready to get it going, download the free software, go to the tools tab and click on Options.. Once there select Audio Settings and make sure that you run through the setup. Skype will force you through this process when you get connected and provide a trial call to their site that will make sure everything is working. This is a really easy service to add to your computer system. These guys know what they are doing and have perfected the system.

I think that as an Internet Home Business marketer, you will find that Skype is one of your primary tools that you will use day in and day out. To think that it is totally free is astounding. Make sure that you add your Skype Name to the signature file in your email system. I use Gmail and always have that Skype name and Skype phone number in the signature. Hey, why not... it's free and it shows that you are accessible. Sometimes I think that people call me just to see if there is a person at the other end.
