Are you in business or Are YOU in Business
One year to the date (April 1, 2009) I arrived safely at my place of employment put my bag down and logged into my computer. Within five minutes of me arriving my supervisor was asking me to come to his office. You see this was the day that I found myself unemployed. I know it happened on April Fools Day, and he assured me this wasn't an April Fools joke, my company was downsizing. Now I didn't share that for you to feel sorry for me or anything like that, I shared it to prove a point. You see like a lot of people, I had a false sense of security. I knew I had over a decade of experience in the IT industry and if something like that was to ever happen, with my experience, I could land on my feet anywhere. I was still in the employee mindset, that's been cured so let's move on. I know you are asking what does all that have to do with direct sales and network marketing? It's quite simple, let me explain. A lot of people in the direct sales and network marketing industry have a false sense of comfort when it comes to their business. They don't fully understand that they really don't own a business at all, they are simply distributors at the mercy of the company's owner just like employees on a job. Sadly to say a lot of distributors learned this the hard way when their companies decide to get rid of there distributor base. With no down-line anymore and no commission checks, that distributor is left to start all over again. Unfortunately most in this position will go out and do the same thing they did before, they join another company and start the cycle all over again, running the risk of having the same thing happen. Well what should one do? I'm glad you asked, let me spell it out for you. There are some very important steps that all direct sales and network marketers MUST take to protect their business: 1.You must have other forms of income streams coming into your enterprise outside of commission checks from your opportunity. 2.You must learn to brand YOU and not the company you are affiliated with. 3.You must build your own list of contacts that you can take with you no matter where you go. 4.You must build a relationship with those on your list before trying to sell them anything. These four simple steps are crucial for your business if you plan on being around in this industry long. Its sad that most people don't put in the necessary work to be successful in this industry. They usually fall for the hype of this being easy and all they have to do is constantly post links to their income opportunity on facebook. Unfortunately this is what they are taught by people in their organization who themselves don't have a clue on how to market properly. These are the people who will fall victim to the distributor slap that some opportunities deal to their reps. What happens when the down-line is gone? Fortunate for you, this will never happen! You are smart and ready to take action to prevent this pitfall.
