We live in a universe governed by law. Every thing happens because a law has been broken. These laws are universal. They apply to every one. They apply even if we do not know about them.

 In reading Robert Fritz`s excellent book “The Path of Least Resistance for Managers”.MR. Fritz talks about universal laws that determine success or failure in organizations, famlies and people. His book is based on three insights.         

  • " All energy moves along the path of least resistance"
  • “The underlying structure of any thing determines its path of least resistance.
  • We can determine the path of least Resistance by creating new structures”.

Robert Fritz`s definition of structure.” Structure is an entity (its a whole thing)...made up of individual elements or parts that impact each other by the relationships they form”.

“Organizational structure is dynamic, and like any thing dynamic, it is governed by laws.”

Three examples to illustrate these Insights:

  • A whole car is made up of many parts which affect each other. Each part is important and must function in a certain way for the car to run properly. If you remove a part of the car you change the structure which changes the path of least resistance and the car will run differently. Change the way a part functions and you get different performance from the car.

  • A man jumps off a cliff. What is the structure? The man, the cliff, the air, gravity, the ground at the bottom of the cliff. When he jumps will he always fall down? Yes,unless you change the structure in some way. What if he puts on a parachute before he jumps what will happen? He will slowly and safely descend to the ground . What will be the outcome if he is strapped on to a para glider? Now he is able to glide for some distance before he comes down. In each example a change of structure changed the path of least resistance and the end results are different.
  •  I grew up on a gravity irrigated farm in South Eastern Idaho. To irrigate we ran the water down the ditch to the land we wanted to irrigate. Many times the land being irrigated was higher than the water in the ditch. The structure was the sides, bottom of the ditch, the water, the slope of the ditch and the land that I wanted to water. To stop the water from continuing down the ditch I place a dam across the ditch. Which prevented the water from flowing down the ditch As the water pushed against the dam the water backed up causing the water level to rise. When the water level was high enough the water flowed onto the land.. Placing the dam across the ditch changed the structure,which changed the path of least resistance and the water had to go where I wanted it to go.

In his book Robert Fritz lists nine laws of organizational structure that apply to all organizations, families and people. Today I will refer to the first four and apply them to our personal and business success.

 “The first law of organizational structure: Organizations either oscillate or advance.”

 “The second law of organizational structure: In organizations that oscillate, success is neutralized. In organizations that advance, success succeeds”.

" The third law of organizational structure: If the organization`s structure remains unchanged, the organization`s behavior will revert to its previous behavior.

 According to law one and two,when some one is building a Network Marketing Business or any other business they will either oscillate or advance. If the structure is oscillating they will grow, shrink, grow, and shrink over and over again. Growth will be slow at best. A rocking chair is an example of an oscillating structure.

If their structure is advancing they will grow at a consistent rate. Success will build on success. When success is achieved in one goal the foundation is laid for success in the next goal and the next. They continue to advance from goal to goal.. A toy car running down an incline gaining momentum is an example of an advancing structure.

 These structural laws apply to families and individuals as well. Rick Tonetta reports that in an average family ninety seven percent of family energy is wasted in conflict. Conflict lead to oscillation and family relations go up and down like a yo-yo. By applying these structural laws the energy waste can be reduced to as low three percent.

 “The fourth law of organizational structure: a change of the organizational structure leads to a change in the organizations behavior”. Our three examples demonstrates this law. We changed the underlying structure and the path of least resistance changed and the results had to change, that's the law.

 In my next post I will reveal how to change the under laying structure of your life or your business, and change the path of least resistance . This will change the results from oscillating to advancing and your success will compound.
