Blogging Basic Training: How Long Should A Blog Post Be
As a new blogger enters the marketplace, one of the first questions is: how long should a blog post be? Blogging is the new phenomenon for generating income. Because of that , there are more and more websites popping up daily. Those who are really serious about their blogging are asking questions, starting out with how long a blog post should be. There is no real concrete answer; however, there are some things that you might wish to achieve with your blog posts that would determine how long your blog post should be. So, let’s answer the question:
How long should a blog post be?
The short answer is: The industry standard for a blog post should be 300 to 500 words. But… it doesn’t just end there.
How long should a blog post be? The rest of the story:
Making sure your topic is covered completely is more important than the word count. If you’re writing a ‘how-to’ blog post, you want your post to be as long as it takes to cover the content. The reason is that you want to be as thorough as possible in your post. Your readers will appreciate the value! If your content is something like a daily tip, then you will have a shorter post. Your reader will find value in that as well.
Which is better? Short or Long?
That depends.
Shorter posts are easier to read and a lot easier to write. Short posts are better made up of lists – Top business quotes or 5 parts of a paragraph for example. You can’t provide a lot of details in a short post. A major disadvantage of short posts is that you may not be able to achieve the on-page search engine optimization (On Page SEO) you desire. Without the ability to optimize the page, you may not rank as well in the search engines, which means no traffic. Longer posts allow you to implement On-Page SEO, which will help you rank better in the search engines. Ranking better in the search engines will draw more traffic. Longer posts take longer to produce, BUT you are able to tailor the post using pictures to break up the text, and you can use keywords for Search Engine Optimization (SEO). You also have the flexibility to bold and underline words to add some variety for the reader.
One of the main disadvantages of a long post – over 500 words – is that the reader may not read the whole thing. Readers have a shorter attention span these days, and tend to skim the content. If you want to get the most out of your longer posts, add a video or podcast to give your readers the option of watching or listening. I found this great article that really gives you some great detail on how long your blog posts should be! In summary, you need not worry about how long a blog post should be. You just need to write on your subject and check out the word count at the end. Go back and tweak if you need to. Make sure your content is thorough. Give your readers what they want, and they’ll keep coming back.
