Blogging Tips - How to Create a Kick-Butt "About Me" Page
When it comes to putting together a powerful blog, every page is important.
Yet many people seem to overlook the most important pages, and this is a big mistake.
A few days ago, I shared some tips on how to create a converting "Online Business Tools" page that sets you apart. You can refresh your memory here:
Today, I wanted to talk about another important page, the "About Me" page. Whilst it’s true that people will naturally get to your home page first, many browsers will want to take a look around your whole website to get a better feel for who you are and what you do.
This is especially true if they are making a buying decision. I don't know about you, but for me, this is the second most visited page on my blog, after the Home page.
See why it's important?
I have seen many “About Me” pages that do little to impress or engage visitors.
In fact, some of them have been so bad they would put me off following that blog. And, I have shared my frustrations here:
Here is a guide to building an “About Me” page that will present you in a positive light!
1. Keep it Focused
The main reason people will visit your “About Me” page is to find out more about who you are, and why you are the right person to solve their problem.
You don’t need to write an autobiography to achieve this. In a short, sharp, and engaging way you need to give people a little background about yourself, giving them information about your qualifications, and areas of expertise.
They will want to know why you are a person they should listen to and buy from.
2. Don't Lie
Some bloggers make the horrible mistake of elaborating details of their skills and achievements, simply to make their bio page look better.
Big mistake!
You will get found out, and the internet is a very small place! A bad reputation spreads very fast and is tough to shake! Forget about "Fake it until you make it!"
3. Make Yourself as Human as Possible
People like to do business with people. It’s a great idea to include your picture on your “About Me" page so that people can get to see you’re a real person.
In many split tests and surveys carried out, people have said they were more likely to engage with a blogger that had a photo of themselves on the site.
It makes you seem more genuine, rather than being a faceless person behind a computer screen. It's advisable to include your contact details on this page. Include the social media sites and any web messaging services you use, as well as the other means of communication like Skype.
People tend to trust you more if they feel you can be easily reached should they have a problem.
4. Although It's About You, It's Not Really!
“What are you talking about?” I hear you cry!
When people visit your "About Me" page, they are really looking for further proof that you are the right person to help them deal with a problem.
Your “About page” is a chance to clearly communicate to your audience what you can do for them.
Make sure you write the content for this page with your prospects and customers in mind. It isn’t merely a chance for you to brag about your achievements and how much money you make every month.
5. Don't Forget a Call to Action
Never leave an “About page” without a call to action. This is a another great chance for you to close your prospects and to ask them to take some sort of immediate action.
Whether that is to sign up to your email list, or to buy a product, anything really. Now you have answered any objections they might have had by reading your copy, and now they’re further convinced that you're the right person for them, take advantage of that heightened state and ask for action.
If you fail to do so you’re leaving money on the table.
"About Me" Page Key Takeaway
Do not ignore the importance of your “About Me” page. If your visitors are reading it they want more information and proof that you can help them.
Succeed where others are failing and give people what they really want! A kick-butt “About page”!
