How To Use Wordpress To Track and “Spy” On Your Customers

Yes, you too can be like "Big Brother" and "keep a watchful eye" on all your prospects and customers (at least when they visit your Wordpress site)...

Scared yet? Well, don't be -- it's not like you can see your prospects through their computer screen or anything like "Big Brother" was able to do in George Orwell's 1984.

All I'm about to show you is how to figure out where all your traffic is coming from, how many "unique visits" you're sight gets every month, who your top referrers are, what your most popular pages are, etc. -- all on your Wordpress dashboard!

Plus, I'll even show you a free plugin that lets you secretly "spy" on what visitors to your site are searching for, so you can be a true entrepreneur and "give the people what they want."

Sound good?

Well, let's get started, shall we?

First, you're going to need a free Google Adwords account. Go here and sign up for one if you don't already have one:

==>http://adwords.google.com

After you sign up for your account, you'll need to set up a Google Analytics campaign to track your Wordpress site.

So sign in to your account and click> 'Reporting,' and then click> 'Google Analytics'

Then click> 'Add Website Profile':

  • Make sure the button, 'Add a profile for a new domain' is checked
  • Enter your website address in the box
  • And click> 'Finish'

Now log in to your Wordpress site and install and activate the 'Google Analyticator' plugin:

Once installed and activated, look to the left on your Dashboard under 'Settings' and click> 'Google Analytics'

Then click the link to authenticate the plugin with your Google account.

  • You will be taken to another page that will ask you to 'Grant Access'
  • Click the button and you'll be brought back to the same page.

Then I want you to do 3 things:

  1. 'Enable' your Google Analytics logging at the top of the page.
  2. Select your website from the next dropdown menu.
  3. Click> 'Save Changes'

Then you're done! Here's what your Wordpress Dashboard will look like every time you log in from now on:

Now for the "secret spy" plugin I was talking about:

It's called "Psychic Search." Install and activate it and you'll be able to tell:

  • What people are searching for "onsite" (on your blog itself)
  • And what keywords people are searching for in the search engines that bring them to your site

Pretty handy, huh?

I mean, you can see how your SEO efforts are going by knowing what organic traffic you're bringing from the search engines...

AND you can figure out what your next blog post should be based on what people are searching for on your own blog!

Well, now that you know a couple of my top-notch, "1984" worthy spy secrets, I'd love to hear what "covert techniques" you're using. Let me know in the comments below:

==>P.S. Make sure to "let the cat out of the bag" and let all your Facebook and Twitter friends know about this post by clicking the share buttons at the top of this post.

Adwords account?

Some great tips, Derek - what's the point of running a blog if you don't track your traffic in any way?

One question though: why do you need to create a Google Adwords account? You can use Google Analytics without it.

Very cool!

Great information! You might also look into a Free tool called Woopra that I heard about on Webmaster Radio. There's room for improvement but the dashboard is totally cool! It allows you to see your visitor in real time with similar information! You can even communicate with this visitor in real time.

Fantastic article and step by step illustration of how to get it done!

Great information and yes Big Brother is watching!

Love that plugin

I think you and I talked about that plugin some time ago and I have been using it since then. Pretty cool to be able to see the top search terms that get traffic to your blog and see what they search while on the blog.

Eric McMillan — Wed, 05/05/2010 - 9:21am

Only convenience?

Other than the convenience of seeing stats on the dashboard is there any merit offered by these plugins over the service available in the hostgator cpanel (view all traffic)?
