Madonna MDNA Tour Edinburgh, Murrayfield flops with empty seats
Was it really a flop? In my opinion, no, but I gave you the headline people would like to get your attention.
I gave you the review people wanted to hear. You see, they want to read about standing on the pitch being 1/3 empty or the empty seats at the back of the South Stand. They want to hear about how she started late, and finished late, and mimed. They want to mention her age and the fact that she had guns on stage. And that the last time she was in Scotland she got married to her now ex-husband, and how she concentrated too much on her new material. And how it rained at the end.

In my opinion, the concert was out if this world, amazing, and I could not possibly give it justice.
My opinion would focus on the fact that she performed to a 60, 000 crowd which had to be good for the Scottish and Edinburgh Economy. I would focus on the noise from the crowd, the fun and Mexican waves beforehand, the Performance that far exceeded my expectations and the number of people who had travelled to see her. Behind me were three women from Ireland and a couple next to me were from Shrewsbury. The show was worth waiting for and I was so grateful that the Scottish weather had changed the few days previously so that we were able to use the pitch and the light drizzle at the end and when the crowds walked back to the city centre did not affect the mood.
Every report I have read recently focuses on Madonna’s age and I wonder if that is even relevant. The only relevance I can see is that she managed a 90 minute gruelling performance with intense dance, tight rope walking and back flips which had me exhausted watching it; I, on the other hand have needed a day to recover from the 7 mile walk I did to get there and back from the city centre, 3 drinks and 90 minutes dancing to her performance.
I have heard many people criticise the fact that her show had too much ‘new material.’ On checking the set-list, 7 out of 22 songs were from her latest Album MDNA. As a fan of the Album, I wanted to hear her new material, and loved the mix of old and new and the new mixes and interpretations of her older material. Oh, and doesn’t the title ‘MDNA Tour’ suggest she would perform her new songs?
Some have said that such actions as collaborating with M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj are a last minute grasp to help an ailing career. I see it as Madonna always provinding material to loyal and new fans, people that love current pop sensations. And the Video support on the Tour from Nicki Minaj e.t.c was genius. In my mind, Madonna has constantly reinvented herself, working with current and exciting producers and singers. And after all, she can. She’s Madonna.
The set, choreography, videos and technical support were amazing from the haunting start and powerful entrance, right through to the finale with ‘Celebration.’ And for older fans? Well, for example, her performance of ‘Like A Prayer’ and ‘Express Yourself’ were fantastic.
Does she mime? Many love to slate here for this, as they do anyone who appears on the X Factor or any other show. In my opinion, she did in bits and didn’t in others. But, to me, it doesn’t matter! Why? Because I paid for and enjoyed the whole experience, I was entertained, I was enthralled. And if an artist who is constantly running, dancing and rigorously performing live on stage does have parts of tracks to mine to, it doesn’t bother me.
So, today it’s interesting to look at all the recent press reports. There will be good and bad opinions. But one I focus on, Madonna’s MDNA Tour Poised To Be Among Highest Grossing Of All Time. A tour that ‘has taken in $50 million from the first three weeks of her MDNA tour and is on track to gross more than $450 million from ticket sales alone” does not sound like a flop to me!
And most of them are obviously going to concentrate on the fact that her show contains guns and has a ‘Kill Bill’ theme to it at the start. I cannot give a fair review without acknowledging that. But, if artist has spent months creating a spectacular show with choreography, story line and video production involving guns, is it fair to ask her to not do it in Edinburgh because of recent events that happened in America or because of a horrific thing that happened in a Scottish School in 1996? And would it be possible for her to quickly change it anyway?
I could not imagine what my American friends went through last week, or what the relatives or the people involved in that American Town are going through. I can recall how I felt as a Scottish teacher when I found out about what had happened in Dunblane. But, can we really expect that no book, play, film or Tour has a gun in it? Is it right, for instance, that teachers were told to remove all references to ‘g’ is for ‘gun’ in Primary Reading Material e.t.c? While as a teacher, I take the ‘we don’t play with guns in school’ approach I am told to, is interesting to note that after 16 yeas of this, young boys still like to be super heroes or fictional characters playing with their guns. So has it changed anything?
So how good was the concert? Well, to be honest, that’s a matter if opinion. I would say amazing, others would slate it.
But, today, I would focus on a couple of things.
1. People Love the Negative
and
2. Can those of us in Attraction and Internet Marketing use this to our advantage?
Let’s look at them now:
1. People Love the Negative
Hopefully in my post, I have already demonstrated this. Readers love scandals, gossip, negative, They don’t always like to celebrate success and like to read about failure.
If, for example, you read an article or report, often the comments sections is full of the negative views. Why? Well, perhaps it is that people love to complain and criticise and are slow to praise. Even if I am doing research for a new thing I wish to purchase, I always take the reviews with a punch of salt as I suspect the majority of the comments will be people who love to complain.
2. Can those of us in Attraction and Internet Marketing use this to our advantage?
Yes, yes, yes! When we write our articles or email broadcasts, use headlines that will encourage people to read our articles, open our emails. Think about ones that will make people want to be curious about what you are going to say, or have a strong opinion.
However, I think it is important it we are aiming to provide value, attract people to us and build long term relationships that we are honest. And that we are positive too. Personal blogs can have opinions, and many love to vent theirs, but in the business we are in we want people to enjoy out material and come back for more, nor be filled with negativity.
So was Madonna’s MDNA a flop last night? In my opinion, no, no, no! But as the tour continue to all areas of the World, I am sure that many people will continue to write about the negative and criticise rather than seeing it for what it really is: A creative expression from an artist who has survived 30 years, can still shift records and draw a crowd.
And Madonna, I look forward to re-experiencing this on DVD and hope this Tour will not be your last.
