Top 10 Blogging Blunders That Leave You Bankrupt

Read More: Blogging

When I started blogging I didn't have a clue what I was doing.  I was all over the map.  I needed help badly.

A little voice in my head said, "Hey you.  Go and read more information and figure out what you are doing wrong."  So I did.  Here is what I found.

There are 10 big mistakes you can make when blogging and if you do these things your blog will be bankrupt.

#1 - Not having a niche.  I was all over the place.  I couldn't find my voice.  Once I decided on what my niche would be I felt a huge weight lifted from my shoulders.  Now writing content for my blog is effortless.

#2 - Blogging about stuff I didn't really care about.  The first blog I ever wrote for was not my blog.  I was writing about football.  Now, don't get me wrong, I love football, but I just couldn't get into reporting about overpayed players.

#3 - Not having my own blog.  I just told you that my first blog wasn't mine.  Huge mistake.  I couldn't find the passion and energy for the blog because it wasn't mine for keeps.  Start your own Wordpress.org blog and claim your Internet real estate.

#4 - Not expressing my own voice.  When I first start writing I was overly concerned about grammar and spelling.  After I would write something I would read it and it didn't sound like me.  So I said screw it and started writing the way I talk.

#5 - Not having a capture box.  You should start Day 1 with a capture box on your blog.  If you don't start with a capture box you are leaving leads out in the cold.

#6 - Not having a contact button.  You should have a link on your blog where your readers can contact you and interact with their questions.

#7 - Not replying to comments.  Always reply when someone comments.  If you do not respond they will think that you don't care and they may not return to blog.

#8 - Not using tags.  After you post an article or video to your blog always tag your post with the proper keywords that you want the search engines to seek out.  Sometimes I forget to do this even now.

#9 - Not using plug-ins.  Plug and play baby.  Plug-ins are very simple to use and will enhance your blog beyond your wildest dreams.

#10 - Not using a theme.  There are lots of FREE themes in Wordpress land.  Look around and find the one that best expresses who you are.

If you avoid doing these things then you will be a mile ahead of where I was when I first started.  Make your blog the best on the net!

Good List

Hey Kenny,

I love the list, I was wondering if I coul dadd one littel addition to your great list? Consistency! If you are intending to blog, then do it , do't throw up 8 posts in two days and leave it for a month. The ideal situation is maybe once or twice a week, in my opinion.

Thank you for the list hough, many people do need this.

Robert Strong — Tue, 08/10/2010 - 9:55am

Amen Robert

People do have a habit of creating and then abandoning their creation. Bad idea. For consistent traffic you should always be consistent with content additions. Thanks for the list addition!

Nice Work!

Kenny-
This is a fantastic list! Short and to the point. Great job :)

I'll add a couple to the list:

1. Not using the power of social media to spread the word about your content. You need to allow others to share your content (Sexy Bookmarks is one Plugin)

2. Another easy one .... personalize your posts with your signature. It's so easy to do, and just one more reminder that there's a person behind each post.

I actually just uploaded a tutorial on BN the other day showing everyone how to make one for free:

Great tips

Thanks for sharing some insite as to why some blogs get absolutely no traffic. If you're too scattered who you really blogging for?

Dan Johnson — Mon, 08/16/2010 - 10:44am

Focus is the key...

I agree with you 100%, Kenny, having a niche is absolutely #1. Being able to concentrate on a single topic makes things so much easier.

Thanks for the other tips too. All very valuable.

A Plan In Itself

You have created a plan for anyone to follow when starting a blog. Had I not known anybody or had not been given direction I would still be on Blogger.com You point out most of the mistakes I made when I first began. My Blog was an Ad with no interaction. I shall pass this on to anyone interested in starting their own blog.

Dennis OBrien — Mon, 08/16/2010 - 4:58pm

Blogging

I agree with your list and with Robert's idea to add #11 Consistency. The search engines will rank an active site higher than an inactive or sporadically active one. The contact form is one that I dragged my feet on adding. It is important to connect with your readers and encourage them to revisit.

Wayne Woodworth — Mon, 08/16/2010 - 5:19pm

I Appreciate It Dennis

Thanks for letting others know about the article. The more people we help the better.

Contacts Rock Wayne

Adding a contact button or link is definitely worth the effort.
