Building Your Business During the Holidays

Read More: Marketing

Throughout my 30 years in network marketing, it always amazed me that my slowest time of business was from Thanksgiving to New Years. Now, I fully understand that here in the U.S. we go on a mental Christmas break during that time, but what never made sense is why people didn’t use the natural networking opportunities to build their businesses. I always had great success during this time of year and I hope you will use these ideas to do the same.

First, there are all the Christmas/holiday parties. Instead of hanging around in the corner or by the food table, why not engage with people and find out how things are going in their lives. Find out what they do for a living and how things are going at their job or in their business. Look for pain areas – working too many hours, not making enough money, being taken advantage of, dead end job, business not doing well, etc. It’s very possible your network marketing business just might be the solution for these pain areas. You can also find out about their family – kids, how many, their activities, etc. Again, look for pain areas. This is also a great time to make comments about all the money spent during the holidays and see how they respond, looking for pain areas. Ask if they are going anywhere for the holidays or do they have any great vacations upcoming. All of these discussion areas will help you to build rapport and then present your business as a solution to the pain areas.

Second, are the shopping trips and all the sales clerks. When you find someone who is really doing a great job, compliment them and then say something like, “As good a worker as you are, you must get paid a lot of money to work here.” After the get up off the floor, you can say something like “I’m always on the look out for people who have a good work ethic. I’m a recruiter for a national/multi-national company that is expanding into the area. People just like you are earning a lot of money and enjoying time freedom. I’d really enjoy talking with you further, if you are interested?” If they respond with yes or what’s it all about, say “This obviously isn’t the right time to have a discussion like this, so if you would write your name and phone number, I’ll give you a call.” Here are two of my businesses cards. Please keep one and write your name and phone number on the other. Thanks.”

Third, are those holiday letters and Christmas cards sent out to family and friends. Why not include a promotional piece or information about your business. You never know who might be interested in your products/services or business or both. How can people do business with you if they don’t know you’re in business? Get the word out and watch your business grow.

This is a great season to build your business. If you use these ideas and pass these on to your downline, your business won’t decrease like so many others, your business will prosper.

Hi there Rod, I like your article.

I myself am just starting out and need all the advice I can get, I have chosen articles as my vent for advertising my MLM Business and for me this will be a big leaping stone as I was never any good at English and the more they pushed me at school the more I hated it. But some hurdles are meant to be jumped and for myself this is one of them. I look forward to reading more of your articles for more advice and idears.
Thank You.

Shane Thomas.

It's all about commitment...

Great Article. It's all about commitment to building your own business. It always amazes me that people are so willing to take off from their own networking business but they wouldn't think of taking off from their J O B.

Great ideas Rod.

We should ALL follow your advice! Thank you for the suggestions!

About Commitment & Something Else...

...that I can't find a name for. It all comes down to how committed we feel with our business and how willing and ready we are to share it with the world.

And the thing is that unless we're fully committed and willing to share it no matter what, we will not reach the success we dream about.

Is like Jimmy Davis says "you're so into your biz that you get upset when people don't buy from you."

So let's all sign our Holiday cards with our biz signature!

Great post Rod!

Happy Thanksgiving to all my US friends!

Effective Marketing Never Stops . . .

Rod,

This is another in a long line of great posts from you.

I've always taught my people to think & run your business like every other massively successful brick & mortar business . . .

That being effective marketing never stops & will always produce ever increasing profits & business growth.

The key being effective consistent habitual massive action.

Have a great Thanksgiving

Been there, done that. Never again.

Thanks to the Internet, broadband, and VOIP, I operate on five continents, and in cultures that never even heard of Thanksgiving, much less slow their business activities down because of it. Too much football? umm, we call it soccer... hehe or rugby (when was the last time you discussed a scrum with a prospect? LOL)

Prospecting your tablemate at Christmas dinner? Sorry. This is where ATTRACTION MARKETING is king. My warm market HAS to come to me, or they will NEVER see my business. Period. "letting them know" you're in the business? Are you kidding? THEY ALL KNOW! Just build big enough and they come out of the woodwork, often in a big hurry.

The clerk at the store? I'll take a senior management type I met in LinkedIn over a store clerk (preferably one with a BIG mlm downline already) any day of the week, thank you very much. No hourly-wage retailers need apply. I don't care how polite they are or how smooth their voice sounds. Besides, why mess with a good thing? You recruit them away from retail and what do you get? A NASTY clerk in their place the next time! haha. Why mess with something that's working?

The Christmas Card thing. Ok, I have to cop to a sneaky weapon on that count. I get to advertise (one of) my businesses when my cards go out WITHOUT saying a single word about business. Purely holiday light banter and flirtatiousness - and NO long-winded bragging cutesy letters included (gagging) (just a pet peeve of mine)

Perfect Time

Network Marketing is a relationship building business. With that in mind, anytime you are around people for any reason is a perfert time to build that relationship. Remember people follow people. Great Post with great thoughts.

I heard something on a tape that I was listening to on Trust. When you are talking with someone you should be free of any MOTIVE. The quote is "Are you trying to impress or trying to bless" This is like a red flag that allerts us to our actions.

Wishing all a great Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas.

Meeting people with a new approch is fun.

God Bless

December is the best time in the year to make new contacts and meet old friends and relatives and in January they are broke from christmas and need an opportunity. I have one for them. They know it from December. :-)

Can't do it!

I have to agree with Steven Johnson on this one. Establish and 'market' yourself as a "problem solver" and those who need you or what you have to offer will come to you. I have done it the other way and besides being very uncomfortable for me, it did not bring me the results I wanted. Happy Thanksgiving to all in the US!

Networking is the key

I have to agree with Marcus Baker and Steven Johnson i doing believe in building relationship with other people and help them solver a problem in there live or show them how to help them self solver the problem will give to them a better feeling

Attraction happens in person too

For those who are posting that internet only attraction marketing is the next silver bullet, I remind you that having a conversation gives you a chance to be attractive too.

The way I read it, Rod is simply saying be attractive in person in your normal daily life. I hope that Steven or Marcus would point out the benefits (not bullet points but rather how it really could help them) of their businesses with someone who came over for a beer if THEY brought up some issue they could help with. If you answer no, are you really "giving without want"? An additional question that seems obvious to me, how is that different than a google search that finds your attraction information?

In the end, relationships involve people. If they are in front of you or across the world should be irrelevant.
