Copywriting is and will be the foundation of your business. Luckily it is a myth that copywriting has to be hard.

Copywriters own the world and they get what they want!

To be great at this skill you must first understand human behavior and psychology as these are the triggers that will cause people to take action when they read your copy.

Copywriters always get paid, so this is truly one of the best skills to learn!

By mastering this skill you will cause it to bleed into all of your marketing and your business will explode. You will use copy in your ads, on your landing page, your thank you page, your sales letter, your email follow up and more!

It is important to know that people buy on emotion and justify after the purchase with logic and remember as the great Mark Twain said, “There are only two reasons a person buys anything…. The reason they want to buy it and so they can tell somebody they bought it.”

To help trigger emotion you want to lead with avoidance of pain and use fear of loss and exclusivity to further this.

Example if you use the word WARNING in your copy this immediately induces fear. Or when you use SECRET in your copy you are tapping into the emotion that human beings LOVE knowing things that other people don’t….

Here are 4 elements that are crucial components of a good sales message -

1) Who are you?

2) What do you have?

3) Why do they need it?  

4) How can they get it?  

Your goal is simple…

You are taking your potential customer or client through an experience where they will try and convince themselves fast that your offer is something that they need and want

Begin their journey by first establishing a Problem and get them to really feel the true pain which will remind them why they are on at your website.

Next by proving a Solution that with feature and benefits you will tap into what they truly want…. Benefits, this is all your prospects care about as people don’t buy things for what they are but for what they will do for them

Flash your Credentials baby… Next when you show your credentials in your writing you will tap into and satisfy the emotional sweet spot inside of them that says, “You will be working with the best.” Then for those that are slow to take action remember to incorporate the fear of loss emotion and give them a deadline to take action by, this will help kick them off the fence.

Complete the journey with a strong Guarantee, which will help lower their guard. Follow this with simple and exact action steps of how to proceed next, and of course use those takeaways, qualifiers and scarcity to strengthen this.

By now you should be seeing that emotion is a big part of great copywriting skills. Learn to use this four “deadly emotional triggers...” and make more sales before even talking to your leads!

Guilt! Tap into this emotion by reminding your prospect of a promise they have made to their family, a friend, or loved one that yet again they cannot fulfill because they haven’t yet got what you have to offer. Get them thinking, “What on earth am I going to tell this kids this year when I still can’t take them to Disneyland?!”

Logic! Testimonials are one of the best ways to add a little logic to the mix. Again most people will make an emotional purchase and later justify this with logic so why not give them a little of this now and plant the seed!

Fear! This is best done with scarcity and exclusivity. People want to be a part of something and most have a “heard” mentality and DON’T want to miss out on something exclusive or once in a lifetime. Use this to your advantage and you will increase the amount of sales of you make with the same amount of traffic you already have (this is really what it is all about).

Desire! People will desire what you have, what others have from working with you or buying your products and services and what they perceive they can have by working with you. Use this desire to lead them to take action with you. Again testimonials can be good for this, but even more so prying into their wounds and reminding them of the desire they have for the change you can provide.

Tips and Tricks for creating Killer Copy….

Increase perceived value by offering bonuses; the more unique the bonus is the more powerful it will be.

Believe it or not but the Postscripts or PS is the 3rd most read element on your sales page. You can use this to your advantage. Some people just scroll to the bottom of your site or sales page to see the price or the offer etc. Use the PS to get them to go back to the top and read the letter in its entirety by showing them they are missing out on something by not reading it completely. It can also be used to reinforce points made in the copy above.

Write for one person at a time ... convince 1 then you can convince 1000+. As one of mentors has always told me, “When you market to everyone, you market to no one.”

Make your writing about him or her not you! No body cares about you, they just want to know what’s in it for them!

Be careful not to lecture as this will cause resistance, instead PERSUADE by using emotional triggers (hint hint).

When writing, write in the voice that you use when you actually speak to people, it will come across more natural and realistic to people, especially as they get to know you more.

Paint emotional pictures by using stories people can relate to and identify with, everyone loves a good story!

As I mentioned above the better handle you get on these copywriting strategies and go all out with them, the more you will close on the spot before they talk to you (I am not saying you will never have to talk to people but you will make a few more sales without talking to people than you did before).  

This one was a huge one for me to get past so don’t let it hang you up. Because I will tell you them more I just started being myself and saying what I had in my heart the more people started to respond to me…. People are looking for a leader (and often they look for them by those who challenge them the most).  

As with most big projects in life copywriting has to be done in little steps… write copy how a mouse eats an elephant

By killing every possible objection (or as many as you can with your copy), money, time, spouse, etc. with your copy you will increase conversions…. Same amount of traffic, but more sales! This can be done in your offer, letter, video, or a presentation.

Use the psychological triggers I mentioned above… guilt, logic, fear, desire to persuade your leads to a point where they have no other choice but to put their excuses to bed, grab some good “walking shoes” and being their journey with you.

Lastly the Holy Grail…. Get high quality 3rd party validation from peers in your industry and now you will have the knock out punch that puts it all together!
