Copywriting Secrets from an Unexpected Source
WARNING! There are is no explicit material in this post…but you may start thinking that way.
And yes, this really did happen…no joke. In fact I’m hesitant about sharing this with you, because you might get the wrong impression about me. But I decided to take that risk. And if you do get the wrong impression …well, you’re just wrong.
I was walking my dog the other morning. My husband got me in the habit of picking up trash along the way because we live in a very nice neighborhood. We would like to keep it that way, so picking up trash is one way to be neighborly.
I saw what looked like an Avon pamphlet in the middle of the road. Then I saw lingerie and thought it was a Victoria’s Secret catalog. But then I realized that the woman in the picture that was showing had half of her bare chest showing…if you get my drift.
I was shocked to say the least. This can’t be lying around in the middle of the street where kids could find it. So I picked it up and threw in my bag.
When I got home, I admit I was curious, so I check it out.
It was an adult entertainment guide. There was no address on it…go figure. But I was very surprised…it wasn’t as sleazy as I thought it would be. In fact, it had some very good copywriting.
For example, the descriptions for the videos sounded like they could have been a romance novel. They told a story that enticed you into wanting to find out more. “If only Janet knew the mysterious circumstances that brought Mark to her department.” Or “The Groom’s sister can’t help but be overcome by loneliness, as she feels abandoned by those she loves the most.”
Then there was an article (there was just one in the whole guide) with a “powerful” headline: “6 Powerful Techniques That Really Attract Women.” I sure that article gets a lot of reads.
So what are the copywriting lessons I gleaned from this source?
The Copywriting Secrets
1. Use Stories. People love stories, especially if it’s something they can relate to. Stories have a way of drawing you in.
2. Use a Headline that Addresses a Problem and a Solution. The problem in our example is how to attract women. The solution is 6 ways to do so.
I guess there is a good reason why the adult entertainment industry is one of the biggest.

P.S. There was a relationship advice column, although I’m not sure the person giving the advice was really qualified. I wonder if the questions are made up or if someone really emailed them in.
P.S.S. For those who want to know, the 6 powerful ways to attract a women are 1) learn how to smile, 2) communicate with your eyes, 3) facial expression, 4) fashion--how stylish you are, 5) it’s not what you say, but how you say it, and 6) body language. Hmmm…sounds similar to attraction marketing, don’t you think?
P.S.S.S. I’m not letting on if these things really work or not. :-)
