Network Marketing Success: Pancakes and Duplication and Cookie Cutter Marketing

I heard my friend Diane Hochman talk about duplication today and when it will, and won’t help you find network marketing success.

Pancake Mixes Are Like Cut And Paste MessagesActually as I was making breakfast while listening to a class Diane had put together.  I almost always make breakfast on Saturdays and I like to mix it up.  Plain ol’ pancakes are boring so I throw in a little of this or a little of that to make it interesting.  Sometimes is fruit, sometimes it’s spices, but I’m never satisfied with the mix as it comes out of the bag...I've got to make it "more me".

As it turns out, that was the lesson Diane was teaching.

Like pancake mix, the marketing groups and organizations we belong to often offer us cut and paste solutions to our communications.  We’re often hesitant to make any changes to these messages because the guys that write them are usually doing better than we are or have used the message successfully for a long time.

You know the mantra: This business is all about duplication.  Finding something that’s easy to do, easy to teach and easy to duplicate, so providing a cut and paste message just makes sense.

Or does it?

I could get by with making my pancakes out of the box, but I choose to dress them up a bit.  My reward is that I get rave reviews from the kids and they’ve even been known to tell their friends about my yummy recipes.

When the pancake mix company came up with their recipe, they had to make it something that would appeal to the masses.  They could not have known that my kids like fruit, allspice and nuts.  They wouldn’t know that I add a little extra protein.  So they come up with a one size fits all mix.

The same problem exists for your marketing.  As you create your place in your niche and attract people to your list they come to count on your style and personality.  Maybe you’ve got a huge following among stay at home moms or maybe it’s sales professionals that you have learned to communicate with effectively.

It’s unlikely that priorities and goals are the same for both and just as unlikely that one message will work for both that will reflect you and your style and come off as genuine to those on your list.

The solution is crafting your own copywriting skills.  Here are some ideas:

With some patience, you can take the basic ‘mix’ your system is offering you as a cookie cutter message and make it a tasty favorite for your fans and followers – and bring your cash register to life!
