Get Your Emails Opened! Subject Line Is NOT The Biggest Deal!
“You’ve Got Mail!”
The days of opening your email and excitedly seeing that you got mail are gone.
If you’re anything like me, you’re on several different lists.
How do YOU choose which ones you’ll open?
How do you choose which ones to spend your valuable time reading?
How do you think the people on your list determine, even before they look at the subject line, which emails THEY will open?
Email Subject line is not the biggest deal
You’ve probably figured it out by now, but the bigger deal is the FROM section.
Let’s say I get an email from 2 different online marketing leaders.
One from someone who has taken the time to seem interested in me, and one who’s much to busy too be bothered, I’m more likely to open the one I feel closer to first.
Last example; an email from someone who always provides value, and one from someone who does a lot of ‘pitching’. Which one are you more likely to open?
If we are more likely to open email from someone who provides value, or who has taken the time to connect with us in some way other than their auto responder, how could we expect those on our list to do any different?
You want your emails to get opened?
- Find them on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube or some other social media site.
- Shoot them a quick personal email just making sure they’re getting them okay, or are able to open links.
- If you don’t have time to look them up, or email each of them personally, then at the very least make sure there is something of value in each email you send out.
You want them looking forward to your next email, not because it has a catchy subject line, but because it’s from you and they know they are in for a treat.
I'm not saying that the subject line is not important. On the contrary! It's essential that you put some thought and care into your subject lines.
There is SO much importance in BOTH. But kill the ‘From’ part, and your subject line may not even get a shot.
If you can’t think of great email content, make sure you have great blog content and send out emails that link back to that. You can throw in a broadcast when you have something special to share with just those on your list.
If you find that your emails are not getting opened, it might be time to start connecting with some of the people on your list, outside of your regular emails.
Pay attention as you do, you might be surprised that people will become more interested your emails when you become more interested in them.
To Your Email Success!

Isn't this the truth!
" people will become more interested your emails when you become more interested in them". Exactly!
I agree with you. I must admit...it is the 'from' section I always scan through when I have dozen and dozen of new emails. I'm looking for a place to start and trying to figure out which ones amongst them get deleted because I just don't have the time to read all of them.
Even if your content is good what I might need to read, if I feel I just am getting pitched at over and over again or I have been put on someone's spam list, there is a pretty good chance that email is going to be deleted and never viewed.
Good content Susanna!
Make it a great day,
Rachel Estabaya
The "Froms" take it every time...
Makes checking email a whole lot easier!
E-mail strategy
Most people use great headline to get people to open their E-mails. I do this with very important E-mails.
I have a very standard headline such as Prostar profits message #34. The reason I do this is only 1% of sales are done on the first contact where 80% are done on the 5-8th contact.
If they see me and know me they will open my message every. I seem to have great success using this strategy. And have more buyers.
Respectfully,

Love It!
Susanna,
I like your point, we have to show our subscribers some love if we expect a good response from them.
Thanks for your value.

Great points, Susanna
You're right, who the email is from can be just as important as the subject line.
One has to do with consistently offering great value, the other has to do with a one-time moment of brilliance.
Combine them both -- and you got something going!
I actually posted an article
I actually posted an article entitled common sense list building (or something like this on here as well about a week ago noting this. People don't look at headlines...they look at who it is coming from.
Copywriters make a big deal out of headlines in the subject line but I think that the majority of people look at who it is sent from...there are times where I couldn't even tell you what the subject line was.

re; isn't this the truth
Hi Rachel,
Yes, I've deleted many emails without opening them because the person did a lot of pitching in the past. The subject line would have to be extremely catchy to ever get me to open another email from them, if I even stayed on their list.
Cheers!
Susanna
Commercial
Wow Paul,
Your comment sounds like a line out of a commercial. I love it!
strategy
Hi Chris,
I really like this strategy.
I can see how it would be effective, seeing as how statistics show most sales are done later.
Pitching right off is a huge turn off. It's amazing to me how many people still do it.
All the best!

some love
Hey Wayne,
Exactly right! Show 'em some love.
:)
Cheers!
Susanna
consistancy
Hey Derek,
You nailed it with that word. It's all about being consistent with the value we provide.
You have that one down.
All the Best!
Susanna
headlines
Hi Leo,
Wow, very detailed article. You have some good points in there!
Headlines are important. It just makes a bigger impact depending on who it's coming from.
You're right though, if it's coming from someone I am familiar with in some way, I don't care what the subject line is. I'm going to open it and take a look.
All the Best!
Susanna
You've Got Mail!
Susanna,
Good movie by the way! And just like in the movie, the email was opened BECAUSE of who it was FROM.
Not to say we never open other stuff, but clearly certain "froms" will be opened more promptly.
As always, I appreciate your content, thank you (and please keep opening my emails :))
true true!
Hey Peter,
I did like that movie too! And you're absolutely right, it was!
LOL, I'll keep opening your emails Peter. I always do. ;)
Wow Your Absolutely Right Susanna!
I had never noticed before, but thats exactly what I do! Thanks, that puts a whole new slant on things. Will put some more thought into connecting more with the people on my list.
Great stuff.

Hi Sue,
Interesting isn't it?
Yes, as you start connecting with more people on your list, you'll start to see some fun changes. ;)
