The success of any business depends on marketing it effectively. But, as my friend and mentor Mike Dillard points out in his Magnetic Sponsoring series, the problem is that the average home-based business owner has almost no experience marketing. Let's face it, most people don't like talking to strangers - much less selling something to strangers. Because of this, many people make a fatal business mistake and rely on pitching their business to family and friends, rather than finding their real target market. Now, it's certainly true that it is easier to sell to people who value you. And as Mike points out, holding value is one of the main triggers that will attract people to you. But the value you hold among family and friends has no connection with your business. You need to attract people to your business because you have something to offer that they need, not just because they like you. You need to research your product's target market by focusing on people who are already spending money on similar products. Discover who they are and what their goals are, then you can offer something that they will consider valuable. For example, if they are interested in weight loss, send out free information about effective weight loss diets and exercises. This lets you build your reputation with people who actually have potential to buy your product. And it will allow you to attract people to yourself via the principles behind Magnetic Sponsoring. Similarly, you should pursue business partners who are already interested in your business arena. No matter how good you think someone will be at a business, they have to be interested in the work. So, the best recruits will come from within the industry itself. Within the MLM industry you should be building long-term relationships with other successful Network Marketers within your organization and other organizations. These people are a great source of information and have the potential of becoming high-value recruits several years down the road. Conversations with acquaintances should be an added bonus; they should not be the foundation of your business strategy. If they are, your business will probably fail.
