How To Build Your Very Own Personal Twitter Army!
Image via CrunchBase
Twitter is probably one of the most talked about ways of marketing online in recent history. People seem to either love it or have no idea what to do with it. The truth is that Twitter can be a powerful tool in your online marketing arsenal if you know how to use it correctly. By building up an army of passionate excited followers you can generate more sales and get the word out about your business much faster! In this article I’m going to give you some simple tips that will help you build your very own Twitter army!
1. Keep it casual and personal
If all of your tweets are about your business you’re going to have a very hard time keeping followers. That’s why you should only post 1 business related tweet to every 25 personal tweets. People don’t like to feel like their being sold on something so post too much about your business and your followers will drop like flies! People want to know more about you, what you’re doing, what you’re watching, what you’re thinking about. Keep it personal and only slip in an occasional tweet about your business or product and people will be excited to read everything you tweet!
2. Follow lots of people
If you follow lots of people chances are they will follow you right back. So if you’re new to Twitter and you’re trying to get a lot of followers just start following as many people as you can. As you become better known in the Twitterverse you can stop following some people and only follow the one’s you’re really interested in. Also, you want your followers to be people who would potentially be interested in your business or product so try to follow people like that.
3. Don’t send spam messages
Direct messages are a great way to talk to people without posting it on your Twitter home page. Many people send out direct messages to their newest followers. That’s a good thing to do. However, don’t send out a spammy first message to someone. A simple “thanks for following” can be really effective. Remember that you never have a second chance to make a first impression!
4. Have an interested background and profile picture
You have to make your page stand out so design a good looking custom background for your Twitter page. That will ensure that more people will remember you.
5. Create backlinks to your Twitter page
Ideally you want people to be able to organically find your Twitter page. So get your URL out there as much as possible. This will create backlinks and will make your Twitter page more recognizable in search engines.
If you follow these simple steps you’ll be able to build a strong Twitter army in no time!

the dreaded 2k dungeon
Hey Jikly,
great info! but your twitter account is STUCK at 2,000. One thing I counsel people on is NEVER let your account hover at or near 2,000 following, as that is the kiss of death when someone (like me) comes to see about following you. Advanced tweeps know that an account with 2,000 following CAN'T follow them back unless they first unfollow others - and most recognize that a lot of people don't know how to unfollow or don't bother - sometimes for MONTHS. So they move on, instead of following you (I just did with your account)
keep the following figure down closer to 1950 until your followerbase catches up to the 10% "grace" margin of followings above followers and your followback ratio will improve.

10% grace
Hi Steven can you fill me in about this?
I'm fairly new to twitter so my account may have 200 followers. Woo Hoo! I really only post fun things because I linked it to my facebook and can't figure out how to unlink it. I would like to have more control over what get's posted to my facebook page instead of it being automatic. But in the meantime I'd like to learn more about the 10%.
Thanks,
Tami
Marketing or Networking
Jikly, bonjour from France,
I agree, Twitter IS the most talked about in recent history when it comes to marketing on line. But, in my view, there is more confusion and miss-information about Marketing and Networking using social media sites than any other topic on line.
The value of gathering followers is to use them for Marketing purposes.
What you are talking about is Networking (i.e. Prospecting) for business.
If you do the Networking bit before the Marketing bit, you are bound for disaster. Besides which, the results are completely not measurable.
I use my followers to spread my ideas throughout the Twitterverse... and in that respect it really doesn't matter how many followers I have. Of my followers, presently close on 500 of them will automatically ReTweet my ideas to their followers every day... that's Tweeting on Steroids... think about it.
That information I send is educational, enlightening and/or educational.
Sales information just turns people off... I delete any of my Twitter "friends" that sends me "Sales" information.
The people who come to my central hub as a result of that marketing are the people with whom I network... I network in one place, not many places.
Sales just happen.
Here's How I've Grown to Almost 10,000 Twitter Followers ...
The content in the article is sound. But Steven Johnson's observations are right on point.
I've organically (no tricks or software) continue to exponentially add 100's of highly targeted followers daily by a few simple yet powerful secrets I reveal in my FREE newsletter.
Here's the proof: http://Twitter.com/WarrenLittle

What I've learned to do is not only attract highly targeted quality followers but average about .80/per follower per month consistently in positive cash flow in my internet business.
That's the real power of effective Social Media Marketing...learning how to transition those relationships over to your quality content , lists & into REPEAT customers.

comment about 2k mark at Twitter
Disregard what was said about, Twitter had a spike of automated programs that were building way too many fake accounts with fake followers. So to prevent this Twitter has installed some checks - 1 - once you get to 2,000 followers you account goes into a holding stage, where you are block and Twitter does this to deter automated Profile building.
It takes anywhere from 1 week to 4 weeks to get out of this limbo, I would keep doing what you are doing, as long as its not SPAMMING or automating your building of followers ( which usually add in the hundreds, etc)
I regular user who stays under 100 add per day,etc - you will get out of limbo and off again building Twitter Followers over the 2,000 follower mark.
Thanks

What's the R.O.T.?
Like so many, I was told that Twitter's the 'hottest' thing going and I jumped out there like a hatch-ling leaving the nest.
I've relentlessly been Tweeting away like a songbird on a spring morning, spreading little bits of wisdom and quotes like chicken feed in a barn yard.
I've even managed to pick up over 1000 'followers' in my coupe, all in less than a month and I've try to stay focused like a hawk, following only those that show some kind of commonality to my interests. You know, birds of a feather...
Now, what I want to know is this. What is the real R.O.T,? The Return On Tweets?
Does anyone have any solid data, or can anyone actually produce factual evidence that Tweeting away, spending as much as 15 minutes a day, cooing to the other pidgeons, produces anything other than a flock of seagulls flying around, circling the trawler?
A wise old owl once said that a bird in the hand is worth more than two in the bush...And Jim Morrison exclaimed that he could eat more chicken than any man you've ever seen.
I just want to know that I'm not chirping in the wind and that I will make some scratch over on Twitter...
Does anyone have a feather in their cap that can prove a real R.O.T.?

I have grown my account to over 30,000 using my own methods
Jikly you are right. If you adopt a sensible approach, you can not only grow your Twitter account but also use it to promote your business. I use my own methods as taught in http://www.longjohntwitter.com
If you are self employed, Twitter can be a very potent marketing vehicle. Just don't think of it as a short term spam fix. Integrate it with your other marketing activities and you will see the results.
Once your account is over 10,000 followers, you can even monetize it by sending other people's Ads through your stream. But again, do that very discreetly. You don't want to loose your followers and you definitely don't want Twitter to suspend your account.

Build An Army And Build Relationships
Great article, jikly. a recurring theme in business is to not over promote your business. If you are going to build an army you must Build relationships.
I will definitely follow you on Twitter, my friend.
Unlinking your twitter/facebook accounts
To unlink your account Tami, log into your facebook account, hover your cursor over settings, in the drop-down menu sellect applications settings, then just look for "twitter and delete it from the list. You may have to change the selection in the "show" drop-down box to find the twitter app if it is not in the default recently used catagory.
