Profit Handsomely Using Big Brand Advertisers Big Game Social Media Tactics

Will you be watching the Super Bowl on Sunday? Who are you hoping will win the game?

I’m not much into football, I’d rather go shopping!

I do however enjoy the commercials… especially this year.

Why? Because big brand advertisers are finally getting consumer behavior and doing a much better job at integrating social media that actually connects and communicates with the consumer. No more lame “find us on Facebook” with no real reason given as to why someone should join them on Facebook.

It’s always been known that the goal of running an ad during the Super Bowl is to gain massive exposure and get people talking about the ad at the water cooler the next day thus heightening brand awareness for that timeframe.

But before social media no one was able to quantify that conversation.

With Facebook Fan pages, Twitter streams and YouTube video views now we can really see who is talking and what they are talking about.

Game Day Stats

Super Bowl advertisers are looking to amortize the hefty cost of the Super Bowl ad with some extended exposure on social networks.  The stats are supporting this integration.

Lightspeed Research estimates:

  • Nearly two-thirds who plan to watch the Super Bowl will be using a SmartPhone
  • 59% will be sending emails or text messages about the game
  • 18% will be checking out ads online from their phones
  • 32% will be posting comments about the game on a social network

Game Day Players

For example, Audi’s ad will contain a hashtag so viewers can follow the conversation about the ad on Twitter.  The goal is to get consumers to continue talking about their commercial for the entire week and keep up the brand awareness for Audi.

Teleflora will be drawing attention to their new iPhone app ‘Flower Coach’ which lets consumers tell friends via email or Twitter who they are sending flowers to.

Volkswagen will return to the Super Bowl after a 9 year absence and hope to dominate YouTube the day after the game with reviews of its Super Bowl commercial.

Your Game Day-Game Plan:

  • If you will be watching the bowl with a group of friends, make note to see who many are interacting with a SmartPhone during the game
  • Check the conversation about the bowl on Twitter and visit the Fan pages of bowl game advertisers
  • Look for ways you can create and carry a conversation with your clients care about throughout all your marketing channels
