Are you using the power of BACK LINKS?

First, a quick definition because I am not going to assume that everyone knows what backlinks are.  Backlinks are simply links to your website on someone else’s page. You know are signatures at the end of our post in the forums? Well, that creates a back link to your website. Pretty simple, huh? Backlinks are something that people are using but may not be recognizing the power it holds when it comes to SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

Imagine that search engine companies like Google, Yahoo and MSN are like a group of mindless teenagers that do not operate on the belief that one should be an individual.  Instead, the only way for them to gain popularity and have any sense of self is to follow those invited to the most parties (silly, I know but stay with me!). They also gossip base who they hear about the most, so that other people will deem them popular and follow them too. In this case, the number of back links would be the party invitations! (Okay, I am teaching my twelve year old about article marketing, he just let me know that this analogy is corny...........whatever!)

Now, you can see how important it is to be popular on the internet if you are building an online business, right? Good.  Then make sure your websites have many quality back links.  Here are two things to consider to make sure that your back links are quality:

1) The general theme of the website you are backlinking from is closely related to your website.

2) The keywords that you are trying to optimize for links to your website.

Now get backlinking!  Come up with a goal of how many backlinks you plan to in a week and try to make that quota. Below are some ideas on where to backlink:

1. Signatures in forums 
2. Writing articles and submitting them to article directories
3. Other's blogs*

Note:* Be very creative and respectful when creating backlinks on other's blog.  Don't just go to some site that is marketing the exact same product you are and post your link.  Go to a related blog. Example:  If you marketing a product that helps to control the amount of shedding of your golden retriever, post a backlink on a website that is giving information on "caring for your golden retriever" instead of a site that is marketing a particular product to control shedding. Also give positive feedback.
