Blogging Basic Training: On Page SEO
This week’s topic is On Page SEO. Last week we talked about Off Page SEO or linkbuilding. Again, search engine optimization (SEO) is generally not considered a beginners topic; however, I don’t agree. With the number of new blogs and websites coming on the scene, it is IMPERATIVE to have a few tricks up your sleeve to stand out among the masses! Knowing basic On Page SEO will help your blog rank higher and faster than it would without it. The sooner your blog lands on the first page of Google, the sooner you start getting traffic and leads; which will eventually lead to more income. In this post, I’ll share some common On Page SEO techniques you can use to help you blog rank higher in the search engines.
What is On Page SEO?
On Page SEO is the process of optimizing CONTENT on your website - to include images, texts, and links.
Keywords and On Page SEO
When I first started blogging, I REALLY thought keyword research was over-rated. In some cases it is. I believe that when you are starting out, you should concentrate on getting in the habit of blogging. That can be tough enough without having to agonize over keywords and On Page SEO. Anywho, … here are some basic keyword research steps you can follow: 1. Choose your topic 2. Use the Google Keyword Tool to determine which variation has the least competition for ranking 3. Tailor your blog post to use that keyword or phrase in your post Make sure there is a keyword in the title, and in the first sentence of your post. Most SEO experts agree that the optimum keyword density in On Page SEO is between 1-3%. A Rule of thumb: Have approximately 1 keyword per 100 words.
Use images in your post
Images add a little eye candy to your post. They should also help illustrate your point. When you add an image, use ALT Text attributes. Always have at least one image, but it can be more if it helps to get your point across!
Make sure your blog post is long enough
In shorter posts, it is much harder to achieve On Page SEO. You need to have at least 500 words in a post to be able to use On Page SEO techniques, such as using anchor text to link to a website or using keywords throughout your text. In order to not beat a dead horse, read this post on how long a blog post should be.
Use ‘Heading’ tags with On Page SEO
In your WordPress blog back office, there is a ‘paragraph’ dropdown. In that dropdown, there are headings 1, 2, 3, etc.
You want to have a keyword highlighted in each Heading 1, 2, 3. With heading tags, it doesn’t have to be in any particular order. Just make sure to have a keyword in each heading.
Link to other pages and On Page SEO
When I first started blogging, I was told in no uncertain terms to not link to pages, other than my own. This was some FOUL information! Link to blogs with a higher authority than yours. This creates a powerful backlink for you! It also gives great information to your reader. Sure, your reader may go to the other blog, but YOU were the source of information. That makes you just as valuable! You also want to link to other pages on your blog. This allows the reader gets to ‘hang out’ on your blog!
