Understanding keyword research is a process of finding which words or phrases people like to enter into the search engines (such as Google, Yahoo, Bing) when they are looking for your information or product…So yes it is a secret!

For example if my product was sports drink, I know (from research) that the keywords people use to find sports drink are the following: sport drink mix, sports energy drink, and energy sports drink. Of course there are a lot more, these are just the most popular three.

One of the many tools for finding keywords is the Google Keyword Tool which is free. There are great paid keyword tools that are available. For now, let’s just stick with the free tool. Which allow you to enter a single keyword and it will return related keywords.

Knowing what keywords people are searching for is the first step, secondly you need to know just how many people are searching for each keyword. Around 40% of searchers usually click the number one ranked website, so any keywords with over 1000 searches per month is worth looking at.

Again the Google Keyword Tool can give you data regarding how many people are searching for each keyword. By now you know what keywords people are searching for, and how many people are searching for each one.

But that’s not all, the last part of keyword research is to check the competition. After all if it wasn’t for competition we’d all be on the first page of Google for the keywords which get hundreds of thousands of searches a month!

Assessing the competition for each keyword requires a bit of guesswork, because only the search engines know exactly how strong the competitions websites are compared to yours.

Luckily PageRank is a good indicator of how strong a page is, as a rough guideline if the websites currently ranking on the first page of the search engines have a PageRank lower than four you should be able to outrank them with a good website and some quality backlinks.
