Revealing PageRank's Dual State

PageRank is simply a way for Google to measure the relative importance of each web page in its index, based on the frequency they’re referred to throughout the internet.  A more technical approach defines PageRank as being a link analysis algorithm.

PageRank appears in two distinct instance: 1. real PageRank used exclusively by Google and 2. Toolbar PageRank with values between 0 and 10, used by webmaters in assessing Google’s trust and recognition towards a given website.

Both systems operate along the same lines, and that is the measurement of quality back links. The values that the real PageRank system uses are vast and go into millions.

To help with understanding the PageRank system, the toolbar version sorts web pages into eleven categories according to the points they score.

Short case study: Take for example two webpages, one with toolbar PR 3, the second - 6. The Real PR difference between these two is not double. As a matter of fact, is a lot higher.

Unfortunately no one knows how Google calculates the PR value of a page or where are those breaking points - that determine the 11 grades - built.

However, we have one clue as to how Google works out a web page's true PR and this is an important step in understanding the dual nature of PageRank. What is known is that the level of transition from one category level to next is exponential. We also know that the higher the transition, the more points are needed to achieve the transit changeover.

Facts to consider when considering improving your website's PageRank:

  1. Google doesn’t analyze websites, it analyzes web pages.
  2. The values listed on the PageRank Toolbar coincide with a wide range of real PageRank.  This means that the real PageRank values can differ greatly or be close together for two consecutive toolbar PR levels of 1 and 2, for example.
  3. All things being equal,a considerable quantity of back links emanating from the same web domain will score lowly as fewer back links coming from different domains.
  4. Every webpage has an initial, small PageRank refered to as (1-d), where d is a variable determined by Google named “damping factor” and when was first released it had a value of 0.85. This gives the initial real PageRank of every page a 0.15 value.
  5. In order to advance on the PageRank Green grid you need to constantly build back links. This is an ongoing SEO task never to be abandoned.
  6. Real PageRank values are made public, through the toolbar, once every three months and they rapidly get outdated as the real PageRank is permanently updated but not publicized. This is the reason why seamlessly webpages with inferior PageRank rank better than pages with superior scores.
  7. PageRank is a matter of web popularity - the more popular a page gets the more will be referenced through back links by (preferably) already trusted websites.

Once Google has accumulated a large number of web pages in its index, it will then scan them for quality and popularity, and it does this by analyzing the number of back links that feed back into those pages.

PageRank Dynamics - The Principles:

  • A web page receives PageRank by getting inbound links from other pages.
  • Links that emanate from other pages in the same website, or that come from completely different domains are given similar ratings providing those other pages bear the same PageRank values.
  • Linking out will not bankrupt your PageRank stock. In fact, Google encourages linking out to quality content resources and awards this practice with enhanced rankings.
  • The amount of PageRank passed to other webpages is divided by the total number of outbound links leaving the page.
  • Lastly, owing to the damping factor, an incoming link is only allotted 85% of its value.
