Search Engine Optimization 101 - SEO Networker Basics Part Two
Now that we've gotten a few of the basics out of the way, we're going to cover the other five aspects of successful SEO. Like the first five areas we covered, these are things which are applicable to any website, whether personal or business oriented; and these all work equally well regardless of the type of business you're in.
Let's cover the second five of these basic SEO techniques:
1. Make A Site Map For Your Site
A sitemap is a simple web page which includes links to every page on your website. Site maps are sometimes used by human visitors, but it is mostly intended for the use of search engine crawlers and eases the task of indexing your website and the pages it contains.
2. Robots! (robots.txt)
This is a file which search engines look for and every site needs to have a robots.txt file. This file tells the search engine crawlers (also known as robots, thus the name) what to index and what not to index on your site. Having this file is essential if you're hoping to achieve a high ranking for your site's pages.
3. Get Your Site Into The Relevant Niche Directories
Niche directories are becoming increasingly important to webmasters, since these directories are an easy way to build inbound links to your site. When these links come from a directory whose niche is relevant to your own, these links are by definition more valuable and can help your site to start building its page ranking.
4. Writing And Syndicating Content
Writing articles on topics relevant to your site is a great way to create new content as well as build your search engine ranking and valuable inbound links. Make sure that your articles are well written and informative to ensure that people will want to read and republish them on their own websites. You can send these articles to article directories where they may be picked up for syndication on other sites, e-zines and even in print media. Always add a link to your website to the article - this ensures that any time your article is published on another site, a link to your own is created. Even if your article isn't republished anywhere else, you'll at least have a link from the directory.
5. Establish Yourself As An Authority
You should become active in forums which are relevant to your industry and comment on blogs in your niche. You can leverage your expertise here to provide useful information to other readers; make sure to include your website's URL in your signature and you'll also build links to your site at the same time. Giving people useful information is one of the best ways to establish a reputation and build your profile on the World Wide Web.
