Search Engine Optimization Tutorial on Social Bookmarking
Original article found at Business Success in Today’s Web World
What is Social Bookmarking?
Social Bookmarking is the process of saving your favorite websites or articles to a public Internet site, and tagging them with keywords so that they can be organized enough for others to find.
This Search Engine Optimization tutorial will show you a simple way to optimize your time and efforts by using Social Bookmarking to increase your traffic and search engine rankings by making the links to your content more visible and accessible to others.
You want people to be able to find your bookmarks in order to bring traffic to your site, because some of your bookmarks are going to be your own personal content. With traffic in mind, don’t set your bookmarks to “private” because they will only be visible to you and not the public traffic you’re bookmarking for.
Why Use Social Bookmarking for Search Engine Optimization?
Your bookmarked links literally point toward your content and highlights the fact that your content exists. If you want to let the search engines know that you have new content, just bookmark it. Then you won’t have to wait until the search engine robots get around to crawling and indexing your new work. Social Bookmarking can speed up the process considerably.
Search engines count your bookmarks as if they were votes as to the popularity of your content. The more bookmarks the better; always using good bookmarking practices that you will learn with a good Internet training program. You can easily hurt your link popularity by going about bookmarking in an incorrect manner, and actually hurting your search engine rankings.
Almost all Social Bookmarking sites provide toolbar buttons to make the practice of bookmarking very simple without having to add time and thought. In this Search Engine Optimization tutorial, Delicious is highlighted as a Social Bookmarking site because of ease of use and popularity.
Social Bookmarking doesn't have to be time-consuming, and is extremely effective.
For reference, I've included a brief video tutorial on Social Bookmarking.
Bookmarks are “instant links” for people that are searching for similar topics and find your links thru your bookmarking sites. That’s what you’re bookmarking for! Going thru Search Engine Optimization training and following Search Engine Optimization Rules, along with Social Bookmarking, will ensure good search engine rankings and proper indexing of your content.

Great Lesson on Bookmarking
Becky
I can remember when I first heard about bookmarking, I just thought of it as marking it as a personal favorite but I have since realized the power of real bookmarking and doing it correctly.
Your tutorial is an excellent view of how to go about using public bookmarking sites and getting your best articles noticed.
Although I forget to do this simple step now and then, I must incorporate it again into my process on a normal basis. I can never learn to much about SEO.
Thanks for the great tutorial.
Bookmarking Works.
Thanks, Becky.
I am a firm believer in bookmarking. It is a great way to get your article or video ranked higher on the search engines.
It does take time to do it the right way. But I think it is well worth the time and effort.
I do recommend the video tutorial you mentioned on social bookmarking. It is very well done.
Help the Spider Bots
"If you want to let the search engines know that you have new content, just bookmark it."
Every vote counts when it comes to being found on the internet. Appropriate, responsible bookmarking helps the spider bots find you easier. I needed to be reminded of that. Thanks.
Bookmarking is a great big plus
Becky
When it comes to getting your content out on the internet and positioning yourself as someone that provides quality information and real value, it is best to make sure that as many people as possible see what you have. Good bookmarking techniques are very important in this process. Your have written a great article in explaining this process and the video you provide really takes your teaching over the top.
You do a fantastic job in showing that it is great to produce a good article but more people are going to benefit from that information because more people are going to find it if you bookmark properly.
BookMarking
Becky: Thanks for such good information. When done correctly bookmarking can be very helpful in getting your content seen by the maximum number of people. Also great way to get ranked faster.
Bookmarking Demon
You're always on top with value, Becky. I especially appreciated your video as it clearly explained why and how to do bookmarking properly.
One could easily turn into a bookmarking demon!
great!
I am pretty new to the subject of optimization.. I have kind of been putting off learning about it... to my own detriment.. but I am glad I read this article..
Thanks for the great info!
I appreciate the comments
Thanks All!
Bookmarking is a little hard to get started with, but there are so many benefits that go beyond getting traffic. Think of how it can help you organize material, and ideas for new content when you run across them, if you take the time to bookmark it.
I hate filing, but bookmarking I like!
Thanks
Becky,
Thanks for a great post on an important topic. You did an excellent job explaining the what's, why's and hows in a way that even technically challenged individuals can understand. I am often asked to explain this topic to executives who do not understand the technical aspects of online marketing. This will assist and should allow them to "get it".
Thanks again for sharing.
Nancy
Additional Thoughts
I do bookmarking for hundreds of customers so thought I would share a few additional things. When creating your bookmarking accounts make sure you fill out your profile 100%, especially adding your website url as that is counted as a backlink.
Also make sure on those bookmarking sites that have social abilities that you join groups, create your own group, make friends request, and participate in the community. Do not just plop your link and go on because that could do more damage then good as some will see it as a spam profile. If you participate in the community you can see increased results by 10 fold.
James
Thanks for the tips, James.
It is simple and I sometimes get moving too fast and forget this step to get the search engines to notice your content.
Bookmarking basics
Great refresher on bookmarking basics and the value of doing it.
James also has some great points to be aware of.

Social Bookmarking on Steroids
First..James, Your point is so crucial. Remember to be a real person, interacting with and giving to the community you are bookmarking in.
Second..Social bookmarking has worked well for me and has been a staple of my online marketing for the past few years. Most recently though, my life became immensely easier and my bookmarking much more effective. If you've not yet read The Four Day Work Week, put it on your list. It's an impressive book and a very worthwhile mind-set, concerned with prioritizing how you spend your time and what parts of your work can be outsourced.
To that end, last week I began using a system called Synnd. I rarely jump on much that comes my way online anymore, but this caught my eye due to the integrity of the person making the recommendation and the fact that Synnd claimed to be essentially able to outsource my social media marketing (which includes to a great degree, social bookmarking).
For $1 I was able to try it for 7 days. Beware..it took a full dedicated day to understand it and set it up. After 7 days I'm more than happy to give them the monthly subscription fee. Within four days I was able to end up on the first page of Google (sometimes in multiple positions) for two different keyword phrases. Both articles had been living somewhere so far back in Google that I could not find them. For one of my keywords, in 24 hours I was on page two, out of 45 MILLION other listing for that keyword phrase.
Synnd is all about getting you on the first page of Google, using predominantly a method of social bookmarking that is automated, yet still personal. Once you're there, good content will easily take over and traffic will be coming your way.
Social media marketing is way more than just making a lot of friends on social sites and posting good content. It's about getting that content found. Social Bookmarking is a great way to do that.

Social Bookmarking on Steroids
Well Deborah, bonjour... As you know, this is one of my favourite topics... so much so that I have written an article here, to which I have attached a SuperSpindle Stategy.
Deborah knows, but for the rest a SuperSpindle is Social Bookmarking on Steroids - with a twist. Multiple bookmarks are placed for one url, using multiple social media accounts of hundreds of different people with different IP addresses, all around the world... and the twist?
It's done automatically.
To see the results in action, do a Google search for: superspindle strategy.
bon week-end

A nessary part of your online business
Bookmarketing is a vital part of building a business online, this was one of the first things I learned over a year ago when developing a foundation for my online business.
Content syndication is by far the most important aspect of your online building process it can be time consuming but your work will pay off in the end.
Nice article Becky, and bonjour to you to Kevin I still learning that superspindle stuff see ya over at the Synnd forum.
Kevin,
Cleared It Up...
Becky,
This a great article on bookmarking. If someone is unclear about bookmarking. your article just cleared it up. I mean its very descriptive and to the point.
Also, thanks for the reminder, "The power of social bookmarking"
Popularity Contest
Becky, I so enjoy your analogy of comparing social bookmarking to a popularity contest. It's very true but it was also smart to include that there are right and wrong ways to bookmark your content. I always remind those I talk to about good social bookmarking habits: "Never, Never create any type of pattern when bookmarking!"
Thank you for the informative article!
Article Extension
Thanks to all the great comments, my article feels extended...with new content and knowledge.
I appreciate the additions!
Doing It Right
Becky, many times people bookmark their articles without thinking. It good to see you highlight the importance of SEO in our bookmarking results.
It a good idea if you bookmark the same article in several bookmarking sites that you change the title a little each time, and your keyword is in the title.
Is it Cool
Is it ok to bookmark your own stuff? I have been told that bookmarking your own stuff is considered spam. This point has always confused me and I do confess I have not used this strategy to its fullest because of this unclarity.
Dotty
It's Cool with Me
Dotty,
I've always bookmarked my own content. I've also been very careful about it. I think of it sort-of like using Digg. I've submitted my own content there, but also content of others. I bookmark other content at least 10 times more than my own.
I guess it's all in the details. Bookmarking my content early on, as soon as it was published has been responsible for getting it on Page 1 within 24 hours or less. But, I've always used natural, bookmarking practices. This is my opinion. Thanks for asking.
