Customizing Your Twitter Background
One question I get asked by many people is, “How do I customize the look of my Twitter page?”. Customizing your Twitter page is really a “must” to get your profile to stand out, increase your brand recognition and be remembered. You don’t need to be a programmer or take a course to make these customizations either. Here are some really simple things you can do to help your profile stand out.
Easy Custom Page 1: Choose one of Twitter’s built-in theme options.
- Log into your Twitter account.
- Go to the top right corner of the Twitter page and click Settings.
- Click on the Design tab.
- Take a look at the squares showing the Twitter themes available (at the time of this post, there are 20 themes to choose from!). Click on the theme you like so that it is highlighted.
- Click the save changes button at the bottom to save your theme choice.
- You’re done! Your profile is customized. Go to the top right corner of the Twitter page and click Profile to see all of your changes.

- Now, click the Change design colors link that is just above the save changes button.
- You now have 5 coloured boxes that allow you to customize the colour of your background, text, links, sidebar, and sidebar border. Click on each box to customize the colour for each area. You will be able to see what the change will look like as you choose the colours.
- Click the cancel button at the bottom to start over. Click the save changes button at the bottom when you’ve finished customizing your colours.
- You’re done! Your profile and colour scheme is customized. Go to the top right corner of the Twitter page and click Profile to see all of your changes.
Note: If you just want to use a solid colour as a background instead of the background theme options, follow steps 1-3 above, skip steps 4- 5 and go to step 6, where you can customize the background colour under the Change design colors link in the background box.
Easy Custom Page 2: Using your own background image. Have an interesting background of your own to use or a custom image with your logo, photo, tagline/slogan, and URL?
- Log into your Twitter account.
- Go to the top right corner of the Twitter page and click Settings.
- Click on the Design tab.
- Click the Change background image link that is just above and to the left of the save changes button.
- Click the Choose File button and browse to the location on your computer where you have the image you want to use saved. (Your image needs to be 800 k or smaller and in a .GIF, .JPG, or .PNG file format.) Select the image you want to use and click Open.
- Decide whether you want the image to repeat in the background or not by selecting or deselecting the tile background checkbox.
- Click the save changes button.
- If you want to customize your colours, click the Change design colors link that is just above the save changes button.

These quick custom changes should get your Twitter profile popping and standing out from the crowd. I’ll go over how to create your own custom background image with your logo, photo, tagline, etc. in a future post.
