Now Is The Time
Do you remember when your parents would talk about the way it was when they were young? I was recently talking with my dad about his school days and he was telling me about how he learned to type on an old Royal typewriter as a young boy in Junior High School. He said that he learned to type 52 words per minute by seeing how fast he could pound out the sentence. "Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country", over and over. Although I was impressed by his typing prowess, I was more impressed by the thought behind those words...now is the time.
If you have been following me for any length of time, you have discovered that I am very passionate about a number of things, my faith, family and my abilities to succeed as an entrepreneur. Since we recently experienced "President's Day", I thought I would also share with you something else about me that I am also very passionate about.
I used the term "experienced" earlier because it seems inappropriate to say we actually celebrated President's Day. I find that I am greatly saddened by the lack of patriotism and genuine support for the United States of America compared to the days after September 11. I remember how unified and galvanized this country became and how we were all so much of a 'single mind'. When was the last time on a holiday like the Fourth of July, Veteran's Day, or President's Day you drove through a neighborhood and saw the majority of residences and businesses displaying the American Flag? I will tell you when...the weeks after September 11, 2001. It was that tragedy that united the entire country and the patriotism, unity and increase in faith was amazing.
It is hard to pin-point the exact time when it became obvious that we had slipped back into our apathy and malaise towards our values and patriotism. You could say we did a complete 180 degrees as a country. But when did we actually reach the tipping point and became, not only, apathetic, but turned ourselves towards becoming a nation and people who are greatly divided by ideology and politics.
I would like to suggest that my dad's typing lesson has some merit to it in the words...now is the time. "Now is the time" for us to go back to the pride and the love of country we once had and start a movement to bring our nation back together "one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
