WINNIPEG -- A southern Alberta man has been fined nearly $83,000 after pleading guilty to GST fraud.

Paul Birdsall, formerly of Winnipeg, was not present in court Tuesday for sentencing. Court heard Paul Birdsall was marketing a number of "work-at-home" businesses when, in 2001, he failed to remit $54,000 in GST payments to the federal government.

Investigators discovered Paul Birdsall failed to report substantial GST receipts on income earned through several work-at-home businesses, including Horizon Career Consulting and DataMax Solutions.
