One of the greatest free tools that you can use on the web to promote yourself and your brand is social media marketing. With Facebook, Twitter, G+, YouTube, MySpace, and other smaller localised social networks, there is a real abundance to choose from. One thing an internet marketer has to always keep in mind is NOT TO SPREAD YOUR SELF TOO THIN! This is a mantra that should always be with you.

I have opened accounts on pretty much every social network, but at the moment I am only focusing on Facebook as a prime social media marketing tool. Here I would like to share a few tips that I have learned from Social Media gurus on how to take the most advantage from Facebook.

Personal Branding on Facebook:

  1. If you have accounts with other social networks that you use for online marketing, make sure you use THE SAME PROFILE PICTURE on all of them. People will start recognizing you by your picture on social events. If they saw you on Facebook through their friends, they will know who you are and will automatically feel like they already personally know you, which is what we want!
  2. Keep personal and business separate – don’t merge your personal Facebook account with your business one. Keep these two separate. Keep your personal account open only for your dearest and nearest and talk whatever you like there. Keep your Internet Marketing Facebook account clean off personal things. You should only use it to make friends in your business area.
  3. “About me” page – here you need to talk about yourself as an Internet Marketer/Any other business professional that you are establishing yourself as. You might be an avid traveler, a great cook, or a yoga master – remember the purpose of your account and use appropriately. Start your “About me” with a little bit about yourself – where you are from, what you have done previously in life and what brought you to the current path. Then elaborate on what it has given you and how your life has changed for better. In the end you can add a call for action – invite others to contact you if they need any assistance in getting started with their Internet Marketing Career.
  4. People who inspire you and Interests – here add activities and list people who motivate and encourage you in your business life.
  5. BE YOURSELF – remember that people buy from people. Facebook is a very good area for others to get to know you and for you to build trustworthiness. You don’t need to sound only business-orientated. Others need to see you are a human with a human voice with your own great personality and your own opinion.

Facebook DOs list:

  1. To build your own brand and to establish yourself as a field professional, you need to be VISIBLE on Facebook on a DAILY BASIS.
  2. Tell people what you do or what your plans for the day are – you are going to read a chapter of a self-help book, write 2 blogs, tell them about the deadlines you’ve set for yourself and then share what you have achieved in the evening. If you’ve written a blog post, also share it on Facebook.
  3. Spend around 30 minutes a day (as a beginner) – making friends with people. Aim to make 5 – 15 friends a day. Search through the groups of your business field, go to forums, chat to people, see how you can add value to their discussions.
  4. Reply to people’s comments. Remember, you are building trustworthiness, so you don’t want to have any unanswered comments (especially questions).

Facebook DON’Ts list:

  1. Really, there is only one big don’t here! DO NOT HARD SELL ON FACEBOOK. Remember, even though you are using Facebook to build yourself a brand, to promote your business field, it’s still a Social Media Network. People don’t come to Facebook to buy something, they come here to interact. You will be amazed how people who you have never pitched to, but added real value through Facebook by sharing your knowledge, in the end come to you for a buy!

Facebook can be a very useful tool to help you build your business brand. When used appropriately and presenting in the right way, it will only bring you the very best ripe fruit for your productivity!
