What It Means To Be Coachable

Read More: Social Content

Sometimes how we get to a place is just as important as where were going.

So what does it mean to be coachable?

For me it means that we do not know everything.  If you can honestly admit to yourself that you don't know all there is to know about prospecting, selling, and recruiting then you are hereby deemed coachable.  If you can listen with an open mind to the ideas of others than yes you are coachable.

When we begin to believe that we are experts in our field then we miss out on great ideas and opportunities that can be beneficial to our growth.  Just because someone is below us in our organization or we meet someone just beginning their career in this industry doesn't mean they don't have great ideas, techniques and points of views.  Help them develop; this allows them to appreciate you as a leader as well as your leadership values, but more importantly it gives you a chance to grow even more yourself.

A lot of times we allow pride to be our stumbling block when it comes to being coachable.  Feelings of pride should be flushed away and replaced with a virtue of humility.  So are you coachable?  Here are a few points to keep in mind while deciding:

Do you believe that you still have knowledge to gain?
Are you too proud to ask for help?
Do you listen to the ideas of others?
Do you have an open mind?
Do you listen twice as much as you talk?                                                                                                                                                                  Are you grateful and thankful for those who taught you?

LEARNING SKILLS

People go to colleges to learn a new skill and they have to be coach-able but don't have help after the classes are over. Network Marketing is great because you have a team that has ongoing help after the class is over.

Thanks!

Thanks Timothy...

It's a beautiful thing to know that there's always knowledge to gain.

Great thought Ernie our

Great thought Ernie our learning skills should always continue on forever. Your right Juanita you have to be willing to do, if your not then you can't consider yourself coachable.

Thanks for the comments.

Great Article.

Hi Shenita, Thank you for this article. I think it will make people think a bit more about this subject. So often we find people ask us for help, but they do not do what we advise them to do, neither do we sometimes, with what our own coaches tell us to do. A very good point added by Juanita.

We have to be open to follow the advise of our coaches and not just say we're going to do something, but actually do what we say we're going to do.

Thanks!

Being Coachable Is As Important As The Air I Breathe!

Yes, I am! I realize that this is the most important factor in achieving success! I must listen to those who have walked the journey. I must nourish myself daily with personal growth and learning the skills to lead countless people to their dreams. I know as a leader we will always be thirsting to become more. It took me sometime getting beat up doing it my way before I finally realized that I must be coachable~ As vital as the air I breathe..

One Mind

Nice article. We have two ears to listen and learn with. It takes a 'village' of minds sometime to succeed, too. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

The key is to follow through with any instruction adding creative thinking to express who we individually are. We are all unique and have gifts to offer.

Do you have an open mind?

Great Article Shenitta!

I think you nailed this one! Someone coach-able should definitely have an open mind, be willing to listen and follow instructions and always improving on themselves.

A good coach will make his players see what they can be rather than what they are.

Empty your cup

Great article, Shenitta.

I do not know if you read John Milton Fogg's book "the greatest networker in the world", but it introduces the concept of "What you don't know, that you don't know..."

This is what we should explore in our quest for knowledge.

People with a "full cup" will never know what they don't know, and thus don't learn anything new.

A bit tricky, that one...hehe

Great subject!

To me, the flip-side of "leadership" is "follow-ship" (coachability). For the synergy to work, you need both. We should also keep in mind that being a follower (being coachable) doesn't necessarily mean that we should follow blindly. Exercising our critical thinking skills is always a good idea. :-D

Tremendous article!!!

These are all highly relevant points for anybody.

Being a life-log learner is the key to success.

You nailed it down tight & right on this one.

Great article.

It all comes down to a passion for learning

You are so right, Shenitta,

It's hard to be successful if you don't like to learn.

It's all about adaptation, whether it be in business or life.

Look at our current conditions with the economy, all the old business "dinosaurs" are going down because they weren't quick on their feet...

I was working as a Landscape Designer here in Tucson for a company that focused on new developments.

Business was BOOMING and then...

Well I'm sure you can guess what happened -- all because we didn't adapt quick enough!

Thanks Shenitta, for sharing

Thanks Shenitta, for sharing this great article. I'm definitely still coachable. The day I stop learning is the day I die.

Ilka Flood — Wed, 01/27/2010 - 11:01am

Be like a parachute

So true,Shenitta,

It's difficult to learn if your mind isn't open.

I remember reading, that our minds should be open like a parachute,if it isn't,it's of no use to anyone.

God set it up

He gave us two ears, two eyes, and one mouth with the intent that we listen and observe twice as much as we speak. Let your heart filter the input you receive and filter the output you speak with deference to speaking only that which glorifies Him.

Thank you Shenitta for sharing. Keeping humility as a personal goal makes us all coachable.

Harold Hutchinson — Wed, 01/27/2010 - 11:41am

Yeah, BUT...

...it's important to allow space for your own input and ideas. True leaders are not blind followers, they listen and learn from those who've come before them, incorporating their own unique spin on the "thing" and making it their own...testing their theories all along the way.

While I agree that if everyone has hurt their head by pounding it against a brick wall, there's no need to pound your head too just to see...but if you know that others did manage to get to the other side by climbing over, there's no reason that you can't get over it it in your hovercraft (smile:)

Awesome Post Shenitta

One of my favorite statements is "If you're not growing, you're dying". I know growing for me means being willing to learn something new everyday. Sometimes you have to shut up, listen up and grow up.

Make it a great day :)

Lay it on the line.

Thanks Shenitta,

That's exactly how many of us feel.

Amy Roberts — Wed, 01/27/2010 - 7:24pm

I definitely agree

Hey Shenitta, I definitely agree with you, that's a good definition of "coachable". Anybody else have any other definitions?

Coachable? Teachable? Not This Guy

I recently saw a video a guy walking thru a mine field. As the leader he was showing his followers what to do and where to go. Several follwed this guy, but one person decided to do it differently and take his own path thru the mine field. He got blown up!

Dave Zuro — Sat, 01/30/2010 - 8:32am

Awesome Post Shenitta!

You are Right! We can have more than we've got because we can become more than we are, And you only get there by be a follower

Timothy Willan — Sun, 01/31/2010 - 8:48pm

Spot On Shenetta!

Such a good thing to remember, when you are new to a particular field or even just a technique, that even though you have your own ideas be sure to listen to your mentor. They tell you what they do for a reason, they've learned from experience!

But even when you are no longer new to what you are doing, remember to listen and be coachable! It is when the most successful can be humble and remember they can still learn, that they can be the most inspiring to those that are just starting out... Just like we as adults can learn from our children!

Great post, thanks!
