Facebook Advertising - ç, Instead Of Wasting Your Money On Ads

Read More: Social Networking

"Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted: the trouble is, I don’t know which half..."

Quote by John Wanamaker, Department Store Merchant

You can waste a lot of time attracting leads that are not looking for what you have. It can be frustrating and most of all - if you don't convert prospects into customers, you make no money.

There are alternative tools online than Google to help you target your prospects in detail and I found Facebook Advertising to be a very powerful too.

With Facebook Advertising, you can target with click of a mous - gender, age, relationship gender, education, profession, city, country, miles and how many miles away from a city.

You can also target people's interests and fans of associations, movies, music and target people with birthdays.

All of these information are gathered by the help of Facebook users who fill in their details and become a tool for you to literally target, segment with precision.

It still needs tweaking, testing but the way Facebook does it, enables you to not waste your money and Ads. Instead you focus on people who will likely buy.

Here's the steps to take with image screen shots:

10 Simple Steps To Target Customers Who Will
Likely Take Action To Buy- Using Facebook Advertising

1. When you go to the bottom of Facebook and click on "Advertising" to create an ad, you get to a page you see above. You'll will notice you can add an image to your facebook ad.

You add your website link, the title of your headline with keyword, description. As you type, your advert will be created right before your eyes as preview. There's more....

2. Country And Location Targeting Plus Miles

You can even choose the country you want to target, plus the cities and how many miles. There are three options to the miles, which start from 10 miles to 50 miles.

But is this really special because google does that with a map. Ah, I haven't started yet. Patiance my friends, we haven't got to the fantastico part!

3. Targeting Your Customers By Age

Imagine, you wanted to target a certain age and you want your advert only to show to the age of 20 years old. Or women who are 30 year old and living in New York.

Maybe you have a business and it's target audience is only for 40 years old. Facebook advertising will show the advert to the ages you desire to focus on. And it only ticks a simple click.

4. Targeting Customer By Gender

Even if you don't use Facebook advertising, I suggest to just go there and check out the process because what it does, is makes you really think like a marketer.

You begin to see how important it is to segment as much as you can until you have a true picture in your mind of who your customers are.

5. Targeting By Education And Graduation Year

you can even focus students at college and enter the name of where they have studied and what they have majored in.

Maybe you want to focus on programmers only. Maybe you want to focus on architects or students in hair dressing.

You can even choose graduation year. Think for a moment of the products that students need when they are about to graduate?

Or you're providing accomodations for students and you know exactly when they'll start and when they'll finish.

6. Targeting Customers By Relationship Status

As you work down the page you are given other options. You can name companies, organisations. You can choose single or married. Man or woman.

Valentine Day come to your mind? Gifts for anniversaries? Counselling to holiday books for couples?

7. Facebook Gives You Feedback Before
You Confirm And Place Your Advert

As you enter the details or choose which to click on, right at the bottom of facebook shows an estimate.

This estimate tells you the amount of people in the categories you've choosen. If you choose people who are 30 years old, live in UK, sheffield, working, married then - it shows how many there are on facebook.

Everytime you add and change - it continues to gives you another estimate depending on what you have chosen. I think this is so cool!

8. Targeting by Using Interest, Hobbies, Communities...

What if you wanted to target fans who are into football but a specific team? .

I typed Elvis to see what keywords facebook has stored, will bring up. These are interests of people on facebook. Amazing!

Let's say I wanted to find people in Network Marketing but also see what other Networks people are in interested in. You can also type in business company names, like Amway, Herablife, Xango, Mary Kay and you betcha! You can target just distributors of Herbalife or Amway..

Finally on the "interest targeting" part, I typed cosmetics and Facebook brought up other keywords. Maybe if I go deeper and choose a product to see how many are interested in this product. Facebook will allow me to do this and my advert will be shown to these target customers.

When I was doing this, my wife said, "I use to wonder how come facebook knows I'm into dogs. Whenever I login, I see adverts on the side of my facebook page about vegetable food for dogs and I bought some."

See how powerful this is. It literally targets the ones you are truly want to aim at. It's just a matter of tweaking, refining your keywords a bit more to get a greater result.

You don't waste your time and ads on people who are not really into what you have and unlikely to take action to buy.

9. Facebook Gives You A Choice
Pay Per Click Or Impressions

You are in control of how much you spend and it will tell you the estimate of clicks you will have per day. You name your campaign, you choose your currency - stirling or dollars.

You can choose to pay by clicks or you can choose impressions, where it tells you how many times your advert will appear on Facebook on a daily basis.

10. Targeting by Date And Time

Facebook advertising also provides an option for you to run your ad straight away or you can choose what day, month, and time it appears. Imagine if you're aiming in UK and your advert is shown in the evening at 3pm instead of prime time.

facebook advertising starting date and time

Conclusion on Facebook Advertising

You can tell, Facebook took a lot of time, thought and planning to create a process that is easily applied by any business to target customers.

Giving you more choices and information you need to have lazer sharp target. It can be an alternative for you.

The ads still needs testing, tracking, seeing which one brings you the best result. It's still a skill and it is still needs studying, and seeing what works for you.

I like the interface too and it doesn't scare the heck out of you the way Google does. It's friendly, easy to use.

More to come on Facebook and how to target prospects, customers who are likely to take action and buy.

Thanks for some great info Adam

This is some fantastic info Adam, I have been hearing that Facebook advertising is starting to become a lot better than Adwords.

I have also heard that it is cheaper to use than Adwords, only one way to find out.

Thanks once again.

Cheers Tristram.

It's a very powerful tool mate. Tell me how it goes on when you tested it out. I'm going to be testing it out thoroughly for myself and for my clients too.

You right. The only way is just do it and see for yourself. I'll document the progress. Just got to post the section on what not to write on ads and also Facebook policies too on ads they permit very soon.

Very useful info abt Facebook advertising

Thanks for the useful information. Maybe this is a better alternative than Google PPC. What screen capture program did you use for the pics in your article?

Gerald Hoffmann — Sat, 02/20/2010 - 7:44am

Thanks Gerald

Hi Gerald and thanks.

Yes, I feel it can be an alternative. I'm still testing and even in test for my clients, it's bringing them results e.g. conversions and customers calling.

Still early stages but it's worked better for me in using Facebook.

The images - I use Camstasia where I can save it as jpeg. Then upload them to photo bucket, and it gives me a direct link, for me to put them here.

Before, I just used my laptop keyboard to "print screen" and then paste them in a design package like photoshop, or you can use "paint brush."

Then save as jpeg and upload to internet.

The size - is 450 pixels wide, or it goes out of the page in your article when you post on BN article section.

Height can be anything.

If you use Photobucket or imageshack, or any hosting image sites, and it says..

"Error.."

Then you just need to uninstall firefox and then re-install fire works again. Then it works.

Sometimes it happens, like yesterday.

So I opened windows explorer and found the problem was firefox, as it worked still for explorer. so I had to uninstall firefox and then reinstall firefox again.

Just in case if you face such a problem in future with uploading to Photobucket or image hosting site.

Video Capture?

Adam, thanks for your response. Risking getting off-topic (apologies) I have another question since you are so knowledgeable. Do you know if there are any programs which would facilitate the recording of webinars to my computer? IE I often register for online webinars and then a conflict prevents me from participating. It would be nice in such circumstances if I could record the webinar to my hard drive for listening/watching later.

Gerald Hoffmann — Sat, 02/20/2010 - 9:36am

Hi Gerald - capturing videos.

Hi Gerald.

It's cool. I don't mind if any question is off topic. Glad to help. Fire away with questions. It helps me anyway to remember what I learnt better.

There are different softwares. All have different prices and I think there's some free ones which I have yet to test.

I've tested one out called Replay Media Catcher a couple of days ago for a friend.

http://www.applian.com/download-videos/

It only works, if you first press record, then you launch your web browser, whether it is firefox or explorer.

Then go to the site of where the webinar is and it leave alone, to do it's thing. When you go back to your computer and webinar is done, then you can press "stop recording" and file will be saved.

You know it's recording and works properly because you see on it's mainframe the name of the file you're watching or website.

Here's their video tutorial:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pf8iJZwNjtY&feature=player_embedded

I've tried this by going to youtube site, to see if it will record the video I am watching with the sound. It works. I have tried it on other sites and it works too.

Try this on webinars marketers launch and it would work. I'll be doing a review on different ones as a video very soon and try and find some free sofwares too.

As long as it's nor a Biz Op

My opportunity is a business opportunity as well as a product. My ad has been turned down flat. You seem to know something I don't know. Care to share?

Michel

Care to sharewhat did your advert say.

Share your headline here. And the text. And also explain what image you used for your ad.

There are things to watch out for. The first is, the image and text, needs to be relevant to what you have advertised.

Take a look at this page, with images, showing you the correct way and incorrect advert way of approaching facebook advertising..
http://www.facebook.com/ads/mistakes.php#Capitalization%20of%20Every%20W...

For example, you can say..

"Free Nutrition Ebook"

Then you got the text in the ad..

"Grab your free ebook revealing the
5 unknown secrets on nurtrition."

This is just an example of an ad that Facebook sees as deceptive because, it does not say to the customers what they need to do to get this ebook.

But if the advert says..

"To get your free ebook, answer 3 questions,
and share it to two friends.."

Then you have shown, the customer what they need to do, to qualify in getting the ebook.

There are adverts for examples some did that said..

"Fire Your Boss!"

Straight away it was turned down because facebook doesn't like hype, nor does it like animosity and ads like this.

There are also ads I know someone did like..

"Make $500 a Month"

Then the text said..

"Click here for more to make
$500 a month from home.."

It didn't mention company. It didn't mention product name. It wasn't transparent enough plus, Facebook didn't really like that headline. Some get through like this but many don't.

Those that do get through with such headline, later get closed.

So there are quiet of few elements, that may not seem obvious but it can be these that turn an ad down.

Again, check this page, which shows you examples of how Facebook sees correct adverts and the incorrect adverts within their guidelines.
http://www.facebook.com/ads/mistakes.php#Capitalization%20of%20Every%20W...

Take a look at this page, it has images, and see if your advert has some of the incorrect attributes in some of what you see on that page.

I know that Ryan covers some of the rules. Maybe it be good investment to get his course, to cut down the learning curve, or just the time. Me, I like reading rules inside out.

I'm a very anyaltical person who likes doing so, but if you want to cut your time, try Ryan's Facebook course. Not that I have bought it.

Just a suggestion. be great to see what you did advertise as a learning thing for everyone who reads here.

I found Facebook hit and miss for biz opps

I like the FB advert approach but got so fed up of some ads being accepted and others being turned down I gave up. It almost seems to be down to the individual reviewer. I have seen out and out MLM ads on Facebook and mine which was direct sales with a high end product was turned down. So whilst I agree they have a great tool unless they make their rules a lot easier to follow I am avoiding them. Spending and hour or so to get an Ad ready only to have it turned down and threaten to suspend your Ad account with them is too much hassle.

Great information for people who do manage to navigate through though Adam.

Awesome Information

Adam, thanks so much for this post. It was extremely informative and I love the step by step instructions :)

Cheers!

Patty Scheeler — Mon, 02/22/2010 - 1:48pm

Hi Andrew

Thanks Andrew, hopefully, and I do hope, there will be much information on this. Not many have yet shared more on how to really go about it and within the rules of Facebook.

There are other ways of using facebook apart from ads, which I will cover, in the hope, to help others use other strategies.

For example, I have been trying other ideas using even Dreamweaver, to create powerful interface layout, and...adding them to...Facebook for customers fan page.

We haven't even touched 2% of what Facebook can do. It's big, real big especially when adding the apps. So, there's much to do on Fan page.

I'd advise everyone, to create a fan page in future and explore this avenue, with vision of providing value that rocks the socks of prospects.

There are apps, which when creating the layout, you can save as HTML, and paste it in one of the apps within facebook fans.

Customising the whole page and...seperating from the masses.

I'm still testing and when done I will definitely share when I open my own Fan page. I don't create until I test things out, strategise and see what works for ultimate performance.

What I like though most to do, is to step back. I still feel, deeply, that we have yet utilised what we already have.

For example, though I know wordpress where you can have your own domain name, and you own this asset - I have used blogger.

To test if it is truly real, that by having one owns domain name, does affect one's success.

Because we do hear it a lot from people.

What I found, is just by using blogger, and homing in on copywriting, my list has trippled and keeps trippling.

It was then that I realised, we yet utilised what we have. I feel, the future will not belong to those who use different things like Facebook, Twitter.

Though I use them.

The future belongs, to those who use what we already have, our mind, and the skill of copywriting.

I'm saying this as to give hope but also truth. Yes, facebook advertising is powerful.

Yes, Google is too but we must first become skill in certain areas for it is not these tools that really attract us.

It is what we bring to the table, our minds, our values, the way we are able to engage people, in the truest form of transparency, in hot skills, that grabs people to chase the home business owner.

So don't lose hope Andrew, you have a lot to do with blogs, article writing and these are very, very powerful in the trained mind and skill.

Appreciate all the info you've shared with us! Facebook seems to be more user friendly than other social media sites .. that's why it's growing faster than others.

Thanks for all the tips!

Put Your Face on a Facebook Ad

Thanks for the refresher. I seemed to have put in on the back burner that this is a phenomenal place to put ads. One thing I heard in a Social Media class I took through Perry Belcher is that it might be a good Idea to paste a nice picture of yourself in the ad. Even if People do not click on it, they start to recognize you! Talk about free publicity if no one ever clicks on your site. Suppose you have the web address right there as well in the ad, you might get some traffic by people who type it in instead of clicking on the links...Again free traffic.

I guess I better get my act together and practice what I am helping to preach. Thanks again!

Thanks for sharing and nice step-by-step directions

I was looking to use FB advertising because I know you can narrow down the search by what's in people's profiles, so I'm definitely going to go for it.
Thanks for your article!

Janet Johnson — Mon, 02/22/2010 - 4:24pm

Hi David, Janet and Dolores Luz

@David, that's a great idea!

Do it mate. I think you're onto a winner. Now, that's a superb idea dude and feed back here. Tell us how it goes. Be great to here how it goes so everyone benefits.

@Thanks Janet, definitely a tool to look at. Look at the adverts that have gone through, showing on facebook. It will give ideas as to which works and why.

Do share when you start and share here on how it goes. It will help a lot of people on what you've learn.

@Dolores Luz, glad this got you excited. More coming and you're right. Facebook is bigger than we imagine. The scope is just bewildering.

It needs strategy though and focusing on building relationships. Very soon my fan page will be up with something totally different due to some html coding and dreamweaver!
