Facebook should I market via Profile or Fan Page?
The short answer to the question is both. However you must have two personalities when on Facebook, both with the same aim.
Your aim is to see if how many people who live in the fourth biggest country in the world - Facebook - may be interested in your business or are definitely interested in your business.
As the top producers say, amateurs collect, professionals sort. Unless you understand the nuances of Facebook you can spend most of your time collecting. So how do we avoid falling into this trap? Your aim should be to set up Facebook so you spend no more than 30 minutes a day there. To do this you need a Facebook Marketing Strategy. Once you have developed this strategy you will find it can be applied to any social network you are on, with tweaks.
Lets take the two aspects of Facebook and look at how they should be set up and managed. In this article I will give you the 10,000 feet overview. This will get you familiar with the key concepts. Will then follow it up with a series of videos that show how to do what I am talking about together with in depth articles covering the key aspects.
Personal Profile Do's and Dont's
My Facebook Profile has been set up following advice from Jessica Swanson in my opinion one of the best Facebook Marketers. Her do's and dont's which I followed are:
Do
- Have a good picture of yourself or yourself and your partner if you are in business together. However you are here to build business relationships to a full family photograph or a goofy picture of you is innapropriate. Make smart or casual and never scruffy
- Fill in all the information on the Info tab ad include links to your other main social networking sites and most importantly your Bog. A link to your sales page is a judgement call.
- Make sure you have a link to your Blog and your Facebook Fan Page and Facebook Group under your profile photo
- Make sure you Block all those silly Facebook Applications that people post to your wall. They may seem cute however they are a waste of time
- Include some nice social photographs in the Photo tab and some social type videos if you wish. I am moving all my business videos to my Fan Page
- Set up a Facebook Group avoid relating it around your product. Your aim is to promote your Personal Brand. There are so many groups set up around Magnetic Sponsoring for example it's almost unbelieveable. You are you, you are not your product. Base the group on any particular things you are learning or have learned, SEO, Video Marketing, Blogging, Article Writing for example
- Make a Fan Page and give it a Brand Name. If your brand name is you then add say Marketing or Entreprenur etc after your name..
- Make sure there is a feed from your Blog to your personal profile. Tbis is provided your Blog focuses on giving value.
- Make at least 6 Friend requests a day and join at least 2 Groups related to your area a day until you get to at least 30 groups.
Don't
- Invite Friends and Family to this profile they will tire of the business style
- Send a sales pitch as your welcome message I would say 90% of my welcome mesages are of this typre and I simply delete them and never reply
- Post pictures of that time your got drunk and had a great time in Vegas
- Only post business related statuses, include things you like and inspirational quotes people like those
- Forget to reply to genuine messages of interest from new friends, always offer to hekp and ask a question - it's a great ice breaker
Facebook Fan Page Do's and Don't
Do
- Have a Facebook Fan Page if you are serious about marketing on Facebook
- Create a Welcome Landing Page with an Opt In Box giving away a value added item
- Have an opt-in box under your Fan Page Profile Image
- Share you Fan Page link on your Profile by using the Share Link icon
- Post business related status updates mainly to your Fan Page
- Have pictures of your products
- Updtae your Fan Page status each week day
- Post all your marketing videos to your Fan Page
- Post a feed from your Blog
- Have a link to your Sales Page in the info section
- Be transparent and have full contact details - people want to believe you are a real business
Don't
- Think Facebook is not worth the effort
Well that concludes this overview look out for the follow up articles. I look forward to all comments.

FB Profile or Fan Page
This was a very helpful article. I did most of the profile things right by trial and error but I didn't know how to do the fan page. Thanks

FB Profile or Fan Page
Andrew,
Thank you so much for this information. I have been debating back and forth about starting a "fan page" on Facebook and this has made my decision for me.
