How To Get A Twitter Traffic Boost With 1 Post, Plus A Challenge

First off, this post is not about trying to game the system. It’s about getting the most out of the relationships you’re building on the Social Networks – in this case, Twitter.

I’ve written 3 posts by crowdsourcing. This is, basically, getting other people to help you create content by asking them to submit 1 tip, strategy or their take on a particular topic. It’s pretty simple, straight-forward stuff – but also very powerful.

Plus, if you’re lazy like me, you’ll soon realize that it’s the easiest post to publish. (besides guest posts)

The goal here is to give you the benefits of crowdsourcing through twitter VS email. Now, let’s take a look at these numbers. I’m sure you’ll enjoy this.

rss-balloonsMy first post 19 Popular Bloggers… was put together by getting in contact with 35 bloggers and asking them to answer 1 simple question via email. I used the contact forms on their blogs to send them the email.

The message was short, sweet and to the point and 19 bloggers responded. First of all, we have to look at the response rate. 19/35 is an ‘OKAY’ response, but not as many as I was expecting – to be honest.

  • This post has 24 retweets to date, and
  • According to Google Analytics it received 20 visits from Twitter that week.

My second post, 26 Unique Ways To Stand Out… was created using Twitter. I simply sent a select group of people @replies asking them if they were willing to contribute to the post I was creating. The response rate was much better this time around. I only contacted 31 this time and 26 responded. Why is that?

Well, it probably has to do with the “work” involved. Writing 140 characters is a lot easier than writing a couple paragraphs in an email – so that’s a possible reason why the response was higher when I used twitter. Or maybe the topic was more interesting – who knows? I just want to share what my experience was so you can learn from it.

  • This post has 34 retweets to date
  • Received 86 visitors from twitter that week
  • Has become my Most Viewed post in the last 30 days
  • and Tyrone added it to his Press News Page

…and finally, my latest crowdsourcing post, 16 Influential Bloggers Reveal… was also created with the help of my tweeps. This one was really cool because I got video, twitter and email responses from the awesome contributors. This time around I only contacted 22 people on Twitter and received a good response.

At the time of writing this (12/05),

  • that post has 29 retweets so far
  • has received 90 visitors from Twitter in 6 days
  • was featured in the SERP’d Round Up post

Let’s get real here… these numbers aren’t amazing but the gradual increase is noticeable enough to really consider writing one of these crowdsourcing posts for your own blog using Twitter. When I used email, the response wasn’t that great, it took longer to put together and the traffic from Twitter was minimal.

Plus, even though the traffic wasn’t in the thousands, any little bit helps. So, now it’s your turn…

Which Brings Me To The Challenge…

crowdsourcing-challengeI’m sure you understand the process of putting one of these together for your blog, so I challenge you! Next year, I want to compiled a big list of crowdsourcing posts and publish them on my blog. This way, not only can you get exposure (and a link) from my blog, but we can also add a ton of value to the community by coming up with this crazy amount of content.

The topic of the post can be anything. It doesn’t have to be in the blogging and online marketing niche, but it can. Here are some examples:

  • 16 Unique Ways To Stay Motivated To Work Out
  • 20 Tips To Living  On Your Own Terms
  • 26 Gift Ideas To Get Your Relatives This X-Mas Holiday
  • 30 Tips To Getting A Ton Of Traffic To Your Blog
  • 12 Ways To Tackle The Fear Of Failure

The list can go on forever, but you get the point. Here’s what you need to do to contribute to this massive post next year.

Send me an email with a link to the blog post you’ve written to Hector@HectorJCuevas.com – It can be a post you’ve already written or you can publish a new one. I’ll be accepting contributions til the end of the year.

Can’t wait to see what you come up with
